Living the Dolce Vita - or not! - By: Pamela Reidy Hyland, 09 Oct 2007
Villa Serena is Domenica de Rosa at her very best. On the surface & in her newspaper column, the novel's heroine Emily Robertson appears to have realised her every dream by moving to Tuscany. Yet Tuscany isn't as idyllic as she would have her readers suppose & her personal life seems to be collapsing alll around her. Emily's struggle to achieve happiness for both her children & herself endears her you the reader while the intriguing events that unravel in the village of Monte Albano are guaranteed to have you burning the midnight oil! Domenica de Rosa writes beautifully & fluidly, displaying a real talent for dialogue & an impressive ability to switch between characters' voices. A great read!
How serene is Serena? - By: S. F. Lewington, 13 Jul 2007
As someone who has always dreamt of living in Italy I started reading Villa Serena in trepidation in case my dreams were shattered & excitement that my own expectations of the place would be corroborated.

From the first page I was captivated by the book & engrossed in Emily's dilemma - to stay in her lovingly restored Tuscan farmhouse, or up sticks & return to England with her home-sick children & admit the dream had been a nightmare.

There is so much rich detail in this book & such keenly observed characters that I had to stay up half the night to find out whether the.."dark side of life in a Tuscan town, (the) long dead secrets, hidden loyalties, unspoken enmities" would shatter Emily's dream.

The many twists & turns in the plot kept me reading through the night & guessing almost to the last page. I can definitely recommend this book to any lovers of Italy & a rattling good story.
