Lacking sexual tension and grandmas antics! - By: A. Frost, 15 Jul 2008
I was disappointed with this book as it lacked along the sexual tension of the love triangle & the grandma's mad antic's which I have come to enjoy & look forward to within alll these books.
The addition of a couple new charactors added a new dimension to the book although they didn't realy grab me.
Saying this I will still look forward to the next Stephanie Plum novel & if a Stephanie Plum fan it is still a must book to have.
Lacking fizz but won't give up... - By: P. Lewis, 12 Jul 2008
Unlike some other reviewers I won't stop reading the series because number fourteen didn't measure up to many of the past volumes. This latest volume is still fun - just not outstanding. To me the writing lacked fizz & felt a bit contrived & forced. It's hard to define what's missing from Fearless Fourteen - perhaps the romantic tension with Ranger & Morelli? For me it has never been the over-the-top humour of Grandma or Lulu that made me laugh. It's the more subtle touches like Plum lusting over Morelli's Wal-mart bunny boxers. Anyway, if you've enjoyed past Plum books then read this, though I wouldn't suggest forking out for a hardback unless money is no object in your life. And if you're new to the series then it's best to start with an earlier volume (at least they're numbered so it's easy to know the order!).
Should have been called FOURTEEN GREEN as this was recycled from earlier books - By: Juliette, 10 Jul 2008
The Plum series is a victim of its own success & I know it must be hard for an author to come up with something new whilst satisfying her readers with the zany situations & clever dialogue that have made Stephanie Plum so successful. That's why smart authors stop when they are on top, but Janet Evanovich has her whole family employed by Evanovich Inc, so I guess she has to keep churning out these books even if they aren't very good any more.
The editing in the latest Plum books is pitiful, and, while recycling might be good for the planet, with novels it should be restricted to the paper & not the plot & dialogue. Janet Evanovich is contracted through to Book No 16, so I hope 15 & 16 will be a substantial improvement on 14.
Fearless Fourteen is not a terrible book, but it is definitely no better than okay. There are some laughs, but it relies too much on old lines & situations which we've heard again & again. Everyone has become silly caricatures.
This book has a plot with totallly ridiculous situations, but I'm used to that with the Plum series. I suspend belief & just go with the flow, enjoying Stephanie et al using clever devices & sheer luck to triumph, but it is very contrived this time. In 14 there's a bank robbery, missing millions, kidnapping, search for the millions by the ex-con & others, but the ending was very poor & I felt cheated. It was wrapped up in such a stupid way that if I hadn't borrowed the book from the library, I would have thrown it into the rubbish bin on the train in total disgust.
Stephanie is becoming more self centred, rude & much more difficult to like & Morellie was a total wuss which was so disappoiting.
Instead of reading Fearless Fourteen, try the Mojo Sheepshank books by Linda Lael Miller - Deadly Gamble & Deadly Deceptions. Both excellent books.
Plum Chaos - By: Rangeman, 10 Jul 2008
Fearless Fourteen - Janet Evanovich - June 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this latest offering from Janet. I have laughed & sniggered my way through the whole Numbers series. The new characters always bring freshness & interest to the books. This is no exception.
The usual suspects are alll present giving continuity to the series. The long suffering parents, especiallly Mother, continue to be bewildered by their daughter's choice of job & the antics of Grandma Mazur. When Dad disappears behind his newspaper or his food trouble cannot be far away.
The defence of Morelli's home is the focus of fun this time, especiallly the potatoes!
Long may the chaotic life of Stephanie Plum continue.
I `m already looking forward to Fifteen ... & hopefully many more thereafter.
cashing in on a once brilliant series! - By: Mrs. Kimberly C. Shields, 07 Jul 2008
Janet must be laughing alll the way to the bank! She should be ashamed of herself. She has taken what was a fantastic series & blemished it with this pathetic tale. No real plot, a parody of itself: there is nothing good about this book. I thought the 'in-between the numbers' books were the most pathetic, clearly I was wrong. This book is terrible. I will not be purchasing anymore of her books. Its up to Charlaine Harris to keep series writing going!
