one of my favourite authors is louise bagshawe but what on earth has happened recently to her! glitz is awful when compared to her older back list - i am so disappointed! seriously, try career girls, venus envy or tuesdays child instead. PLEASE LOUISE GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER YOU USED TO BE GREAT!
Sloppy writing! - By: SK, 07 Oct 2008
This is an easy going, quite fun book but it is fairly predictable & is very sloppily written. It's full of silly mistakes, like: Athena driving at 3.30 pm on her way to lunch at her sister's house where they are alll drinking mid morning; talk of the 'autumn sun' in January; the Seychelles being in the Pacific; & many more similar mistakes. Also the book starts in January, weeks & weeks pass (& half the book), & it's still talking about a late January day. These easily avoidable errors slightly ruined the book for me, I felt it showed a disregard for the reader, that the book didn't seem to have been proof read at alll.
just too long and a bit boring - By: T-bone, 22 Sep 2008
I had high hopes for this book, I thought it would be a fun way to pss an afternoon, but by the time I was halfway through I was gettign rather bored.
None of the characters are very likeable, I have to say that there was not a single person in this that I was rooting for, I just wanted to give alll the women a good slap!
The author seems to spend more time detailing designer outfits than she does concentrating on the plot, & it alll came across as rather shalllow.
Although I sometimes enjoy chick-lit for a lighthearted read this is not one of the best I have read, & seems a little formulaic.
It may be an ok read for on the beach when you need very little concentrationa nd just want to pass some time, & die hard chick-lit fans might enjoy it, but it just felt a bit too dull for me.
I would recommend reading marian keyes, sheila flanagan, patricia scanlan or an early jane green over this book.
A description of a lifestyle rather than a story - By: Mrs. S. E. Davies, 21 Sep 2008
I have been disappointed with this book of Louise Bagshawe & I am afraid I have to agree with the other reviewer who stated that the quality is deteriorating as she writes each novel. I did enjoy the first half of the book as I quite like books that are very descriptive of the luxury lifestyles of the rich & this book spends quite a bit of it's time on describing the clothing & homes of the main characters. However halfway through the book, I suddenly realised that the description was alll I was getting, rather than a decent storyline.
The storyline that is given is about 4 heiresses whose wealth is reliant on the favours of their wealthy uncle, are suddenly cut off from the money by the manovering of his vindictive new young fiance (with his approval). It describes how they have to survive on their own wits & how they try to get back their inheritance by various ways.
The story is written in a lazy way, each heiress seems to be able to step into new high powered careers seemingly without any previous training or experience, the devious dangerous fiance & the uncles scheming seems to run out of steam towards the end of the book & Louise Bagshaw quickly ties up the loose ends without any real thought or attempt to create any suspense.
I got pretty bored towards the end of the book & just read the last few pages simply to end the storyline.
I am afraid I cannot recommend this book.
Now that's what I call 'chick-lit'... - By: LittleReader, 19 Sep 2008
After reading some not-so-fabulous chick lit lately, LB delivers another corker in 'Glitz'. I just loved this novel from beginning to end - it's obsession with designer name-dropping at every turn, it's somewhat delightful shalllowness, it's straight-out-of-Hollywood plot - marvellous!
I mean, let's be right, I don't pick up this sort of book & expect to be profoundly awakened - I pick it up to marvel at the lives of the rich & famous & to become utterly engrossed in some good old fashioned storytelling.
Juno, Athena, Diana & Venus are spoiled & verging on irritating until their constant stream of money, via a rich old uncle, is under threat & then they reallly come into their own - taking on Bai-Ling, the uncles fiancee', & a newfound commitment to making their own money, the novel's pace reallly takes flight until I found myself unable to put it down until I'd finished it. And what a finale - utterly fitting in a wonderfully cheesy way...Loved it!
