Dull as ditchwater - By: The Kitten, 23 Sep 2008
I wish I hadnt bothered ordering this,BUT I read the reviews & thought Id love it, oh what a mistake!.....dull,one dimensional characters , the author even managed to make Tuscany sound as exciting as Nantwich......I didnt believe in any of the characters....
Id recommend the author reads Marlena De Blasi A Thousand Days in Tuscany ,now thats a novel about the passion of Italy not this lukewarm fare.
A Little Taste of Italy - By: Michelle Moore, 24 Jul 2008
According to the magazine column that Emily writes, life in Italy is just perfect. In reality though, it's certainly not. After her husband leaves her, Emily is left alone in their Tuscan farmhouse, along with her three children, who alll have their own problems.
We are graduallly introduced to Emily, her children, her friends, & her new love interest, & the developing story is warmly & humorously told.
The surrounding countryside & towns are delightfully described, & there is some interesting local history explored.
The various storylines alll weave together towards the end, & finishing the book felt like leaving behind some good friends.
Funny and touching - By: Trillion, 28 Oct 2007
The story of Emily, a British woman struggling to bring up two teenage daughters & a toddler in Tuscany while still caught up in her own unresolved romantic dreams. The writing evokes Italy with great charm, but digs beneath the banalities of picture postcard images to explore the darker side of the country's recent past. It is thoughtful & entertaining, & alongside the romance, it asks some big questions about loyalty. It's a great read, & made me smile a lot.
Unusual surprise ....... - By: Mrs. Caroline Williams, 19 Oct 2007
Too often books depict a life seemingly better than where you live, but the book delves deeper & the characters & country life alll become increasingly enticing - like an onion - peel one layer & you find another.
There are twists & turns in the story which take you completely by surprise - you inevitably come across a character who will remind you of someone you know. I felt I had lost touch with a friend when I finallly got to the end. The characters are well thought out, each adding their bit to the story, the narrative describing the landscape & weather will make you want to throw your windows open & embrace the heat (except we haven't got any).
Several dinners at home became take-aways as I forgot to put the book down! Perfect book for long English winter evenings.
Villa Serena - By: Francis Considine, 09 Oct 2007
Villa Serena is a real page turner - I couldn't put it down. Domenica de Rosa's witty & perceptive writing this time introduces an element of suspense which makes the storyline reallly gripping. Beautiful descriptions strongly evoke the pungent & romantic Tuscan countryside, people & culture. Thoroughly enjoyable.
