Troubling, but what a read! - By: Suzanne Lidstrom, 16 Oct 2007
O'Farrell's story spans generations & continents, yet feels strangely close to home throughout. It is a beautifully paced tale considering the interwoven lives of one family, one web of women. In contrast to the fully developed characters of Iris & the mysterious Esme, the sisters, mothers, daughters, nieces, grandmothers & great aunts, the menfolk step out of the shadows, exert their influence & slink away again without needing to take centre stage.

Esme's life resembles a river glimmering in the arctic sun, not entirely devoid of beauty, but stark like none other, owing more to the harshness of the long winters than activity in the brief growing season. Swirling currents join & separate above unfathomable black depths, & one is suddenly aware of the intense cold, & the danger of being sucked under.

This is a book to read, & read again.
