Boring, Unintelligent and quite low on standard of dialogue - By: K. J. Ekermawi, 06 Jun 2008
I thought this was the worst book in the whole series. Not to mention that the latest 3 books were more simplistic than I have ever read. It is very sad when you read these surreal events taking place & then Cato comes with the silliest of plans & somehow, miraculously, because uncle Simon wants it so, they win! I like it when they win, but for heaven's sake, put some good plan together, a good & real strategy, then make them win!

Also, with regards to dialogue, it is the most boring ever! Simon goes on & on about things that he has repeated endlessly in alll his books. Someone needs to point out to Simon that in real life, soldiers do not calll there centurions "man"! Nor do using loads of foul language make anyone feel more entrenched into any novel! In Centurion, the world is ablaze while Marco & Cato are having another silly & cynical conversation about some boring point they have made a hundred times already! They are ordered not to speak to the king & remain silent, yet they both start another boring conversation while everyone is hushing them!!! A good writing has a good strategy, dialogue, development of characters, realistic growth of novel, & sheer excitement!
Alas, very little of the above is seen in 'Centurion'! Therefore, I feel that unless something drastic is done, I will have to say goodbye to Macro & Cato, which is reallly hard for me as I have been reading their novels for a few years now, hoping that they'd improve, not get worse! I give up on Simon Scarrow.
Scarrow back on form!. - By: S. Glossop, 15 Apr 2008
I thought Simon's last book Eagle in the sand was a little weaker than his high standards for the other Macro & Cato books. Centurion is however a return to original form & is an excellent read. Fast paced & I could not put it down in the last 100 odd pages. This is more in line with some of the earlier books in the series. All the characters are fleshed out very well & the strenghts & weaknesses of Macro & Cato are portrayed very well.
An author improves - By: Big Jim, 22 Mar 2008
I am putting the same review on this book & Scarrow's first one in the series, "Under the Eagle" Now that one is poor; poorly written, bog-standard charactarisation & ho-hum action scenes, but...

By the time you get to "Centurion" we have an author who has settled into his style, still basic, but eminently readable, with the author's research & expertise in the subject lightly spread amongst the plot & the expansion of the major characters into almost loveable specimens.

So for those of you reading this review in "Under the Eagle" stick with this series, it gets way better.
Centurion - By: Simon Head, 12 Mar 2008
Having read & enjoyed alll the other books in the series this does not disappoint. Its a fast moving read with some awesome battle scenes with Cato & Macro getting well stuck in. This is a book for that most people will enjoy & can be picked up wether or not you have read the rest of the series (although i hope you do).

Best yet!! - By: Bush, 11 Mar 2008

Simon produces yet again! If you have been following this excellent series of books like I have the latest Macro & Cato adventure wont disappoint. As you would expect the lads are in the thick of it yet again, plenty of action & even a little romance (but not enough to distract the reader or our heroes!) As an added bonus I always learn something from Simon's books too! To close, an fantastic book worth every penny. :)
