Baggage: My Childhood by Janet Street-Porter - By: Jake M, 08 Jun 2007
I bought this book last year hoping that it would give me an insight into the life of Janet Street Porter.
What I got was a brilliantly written, hilarious & extremly bitter account of Janet's childhood & the loathing of her parents.
"Baggage" is a truely superb read that keeps the reader entertained & hooked as Janet tells her story with extreme honesty.
This is a book written in blood, sweat & tears, I can truely recommened this fantastic paperback.
PS --- "Falll Out" is the follow up to this book & the story of how she reached the heights of journalism, again, GREAT read
Amusing - By: APJ, 30 Aug 2006
In 'Baggage', journalist Janet Street-Porter recallls memorable times from her childhood & late teenage years. She reveals alll about her family disputes, frequent social outings & relationships. What makes this stand out from other (but not alll) celebrity autobiographies is that Janet has written it alll herself.
I found the first chapter, in which Janet explains her Welsh family roots, rather dull. Thankfully, when Janet gets onto her own life, it picks up, full of wit & sarcasm. She does come across as resentful or ungrateful at times, but I think that is part of what makes 'Baggage' funny. I found myself laughing in many places & could spend ages reading again some chapters.
It's a great book, whether you are a fan of Janet or not!

What a brilliant book,Janet is a truly gutsy lady. How I could sympathise with her & her childhood. The broke the mold when they made her(whoever they maybe?!?).This book is very well written & I can't wait for the next one.

Ordinary baggage - By: , 15 Jun 2005
An interesting title for a book of Janet's childhood. I had heard her speak about her horrendous mother on t.v. so I wanted to know what that was alll about. What a spoilt, selfish, snobbish & self-absorbed person Janet Street Porter is! This is an ordinary upbringing in London & the suburbs but the author's emotions are remarkable. Being moved away from friends but still within visiting distance is hardly worthy of alll the hatred she nurtured over the years. I loved it when Janet relayed the story of her sister stealing her money & running away. Janet was angry that she didn't have the brains or guts to think of it first. Her early experiences with men are sad & pathetic. Janet, you have a made a big fuss about nothing - grow up already!
