For most of the book I thought that Jardine was back to his best. Alas his tendancy to solve crimes by such contrived means kicked in & spoilt the ending. Regretably also in evidence was the usual Skinner invulnerability & somewhat unbelievable relationship with the First Minister in-waiting (why does Jardine make his characters like this?)
Back on form - By: Spring-heeled Jack, 25 Mar 2008 The last Skinner book was arrant nonsense, but this one is back on form. Following directly after the events of the previous book, this inserts a slight dose of reality into alll that silliness.
The real strength of these books has always been the breadth of the cast of characters, rather than just Skinner himself. The whole cast of supporting characters have lives & personalities & grow along with the main characters as the series progresses. It is especiallly fun to see Proud Jimmy out from behind his desk & investigating a mystery of his own.

I was stuck at a train station with nothing to read, made this purchase & was glad I did. This was my first Bob Skinner mystery & it will not be my last.

Classic Jardine. Not the best in the Skinner series, IMO, but reallly good anyway.
Jardine is underrated. He is often compared to Ian Rankin & I think it should be the other way around,ie, Rankin is nearly as good as Jardine!!
an excellent read - By: JayCee, 12 Sep 2006 Thisis just what you would expect of a Skinner novel, four interwoven stories that hold your interest from the very first page. Whilst it does follow on from the previous book, Lethal Intent, it would be just as enjoyable if you had never read any of this series. Your enjoyment is enhanced though if you know the characters I can't wait for the next one.
