In sight full - By: HighD, 03 Aug 2008
The book has a lot more depth than I expected from the lurid retro cover. It covers loads of interesting scenarios I found interesting/challlenging but would rather experience as thought experiments than in the real world.
Oh yeah - it is very funny at times.
naughty AND nice - By: Claudette Wells, 29 Jul 2008
I loved it.... & I'm not even British! An easy, quick & fun read. An education for me & a bit like reading a naughty diary. I laughed out loud & gasped audibly. Fountain is extremely candid about his own self examination & "seeing something of himself in others" he observed on his journey. His candor is disarming & at times touching. I am now definitely one of his newest & biggest fans & can't wait to read his next book, whatever it may be.
Rude Britannia - By: Gavin P. Fearnley, 24 Jul 2008
I bought the book as holiday reading material & it proved perfect for the job. Not at alll sleazy but a great account of a very funny, interesting & suprising journey around Britain. Mr Fountain clearly enjoyed the research & writes about it with a great sense of humour. My girlfriend tutted when she read the back cover but then read the book herself & thoroughly enjoyed it.
Big Yawn - By: Mark Nash, 13 Jul 2008
I reallly liked the sound of this book, but was disappointed to say the least. What annoyed me more than anything, was the outing of people & clubs, that may have wished to keep a low profile. Only one of the clubs he visited, did he inform them of his purpose & they promptly asked him to leave. From then on he went "undercover". He lures one guy from the internet, to a meeting at a bar, in the pretence of being into zoophilia. After pages of the writer describing his journey to Hull to meet this guy ie: telling us a street by street description of the area, & even how he walked into the wrong pub, as you can imagine, I was on the edge of my seat by this time, He finallly meets up with this strange man, who is described in detail, including first name, clothing, & even his jewelry (in detail) I imagine there are only one or two gay bars in Hull, so anyone from Hull that read this book, would spot this guy a mile away. At no point does he tell the guy he writing a book. The same goes for alll the other places/people he visits (not many).
He visits a sex club in London, complains about the loos, lack of hygiene, & atmosphere. This from a man who says he often visits public toilets for sex. He makes fun of alll he meets, but not in a humorous way, more in a bitter, nasty way. Does he have any "fun" at the places he visits? Not a bit. Although he says he likes sex & sex clubs, you get the feeling that reallly, it's alll beneath him.
Deliciously unexpected - By: jonathan jones, 25 Jun 2008
What a treat! I was actuallly bought this book as a joke present but was delighted to discover that this was not a sleazy look at british deviants but in fact a thrilling journey around the UK that just happens to be a bit sexy. it is full of unexpected people & places but it is a much cheekier- "kiss me quick" britain than i was expecting . what Fountain does best is talk about himself, which is rather a good job as the book acts as both guide & autobiography. he is a likable author though sometimes a little shocking. what is nice, however, is that he too is shocked by some of the people he comes across & some of the locations he comes across them. alll in alll i thoroughly enjoyed the book & will continue to recommend it-even to my most prudish friends.
