fantastic!!! - By: Mrs. Janine Ridgway, 13 Oct 2008
I bought this book to take to Egypt with me earlier this year. I usuallly take Jackie collins & other light reading material but as I had thoroughly enjoyed other Richard & Judy recommendations I took this. I could not put it down!!! In my opinion it was cleverly written & rarely for a book, kept you guessing until the end. Yes, it is sad & yes, at times the over description could get a bit tedious but I found that was because I just wanted to get to the end to see exactly what the climax of the story was. One of my holiday party, only ninteen years of age, read it after myself & couldnt put it down. I thouroughly recommend this book.
Absolutely Amazing!! - By: Mrs. C. Durber, 12 Oct 2008
First off i will admit i'm not much of a reader at alll but when a friend recommended this i thought why not? I'm reallly glad my friend reallly pushed me to read it because it is simply one of the best books you will read. The author has a gift & was born to write. I won't say anything about the book but just trust me & read this book! You won't regret it!!
Extraordinary - By: SUE, 11 Oct 2008
I started reading Ellory's books from the most recent backwards to his first & have loved them alll in slightly different degrees. This is perhaps my favourite. It still amazes me that a guy from Birmingham can write so authenticallly about life in the U.S. I recommend it highly & can't wait for the next one. Keep em coming Rog !!
Did I like this or not? - By: A. Smith, 10 Oct 2008
I felt compelled to write something about this book, though I actuallly listened to the full length audio book.
Did I enjoy this?
I am not so sure, I couldn't stop listening to it as it was reallly addictive, it felt that there was not much going on & wanted to stop it because of this but I reallly wanted to find out what it was alll about. I reallly wanted this to be have a happy ending.....
Did I enjoy this?
Whenever I see it in the bookstore it gives me a shudder, it felt I lived this persons life & I have fond memories of this.
Did I enjoy this, I think the answer is yes. Reminded me of how I felt when I saw One flew over the cuckoos nest. 'What was that about?' Dunno, but it was good.
Left feeling unsatisfied - By: Shaun Burnett, 21 Sep 2008
After stumbling across positive reviews for this book & being intrigued by the title, I bought A Quiet Belief in Angels & after the first 3-4 chapters found I was gripped. Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed the drawn out descriptions of characters & feelings & felt this helped bring a place & an era to life that I've never experienced.
Whilst I enjoyed the book I felt it suffered in some key areas.
Firstly, we are expected to believe that a murder spree of this magnatitude targetting little girls gets no more attention than a collection of the local smalll town law enforcement officers who seem to offer nothing in the book other than meeting up occasionallly for a coffee & reviewing newspaper clippings. Secondly, character involvement - where childhood friends & adult friends / lovers seem to jump in & out of the lead character's life without the author reallly developing them to an extent you feel you know them in the way you know Joseph. Their motivations, emotions & background are missing to an extent they just become a series of names. The final criticism is that as a 'who dunnit' - it's very disappointing. With limited characters in the book, or alive by the second half, it's so obvious & after an entire book dedicated to building the horror of the murders, there's absolutely no reason or motive explained. This particularly left me disappointed more than the other criticisms & for a book that many felt was drawn out - I feel the final scene was worthy of dialogue between the characters. On the whole an enjoyable read despite the criticisms - but a reallly poor ending & therefore not good enough for me to consider following up with another Ellory book.
