Excellent serial character Dirk Pitt - By: Red, 28 Aug 2008
I have never been a big fan of action thrillers. The only author I read regularly in this genre is Lee Child & his `Jack Reacher` character, & I enjoy him a lot, so I decided to give Clive Cussler a try. I am happy to say I was not disappointed! Even though "Pacific Vortex" was the first published book in the Dirk Pitt adventures series, it was the first Cussler wrote, so logicallly, this is the novel I picked to start my journey. I found an interesting character that lives at the edge & is passionate about his work. Also in some aspects he is similar to James Bond, women mainly, & the mix is sufficient to keep the reader thoroughly entertained. If you enjoy serial characters then this is a must series for you, also try Michael Connelly`s `Harry Bosh` series, or much more violent is the `Soft Target` thrillers by Conrad Jones. In the Dirk pitt stories Cussler has created a very entertaining series, with a character that has an arrogant & pedantic side, but whom also shows his pure emotions & is true to his friends & ideals. This makes the Special Project Director of the National Underwater & Marine Agency a very likable character. This is a book that a reader can breeze through in a few hours making it an enjoyable way to spend a weekend's afternoon. I will surely read the next book in this series hoping for a similar experience.

I Really Enjoyed This One - By: Darren G. Burton, 31 Jul 2008
Pacific Vortex was apparently the first book Clive Cussler ever wrote. Word is he didn't want to publish this one, but friends & family encouraged him to.

I'm glad he did.

I rate it as one of his most entertaining novels. It reallly keeps you turning those pages as Cussler had Dirk Pitt carving through the story at a rapid pace.

The Dirk Pitt series (and alll Cussler books for that matter) are entertaining & a lot of fun to read.

Reading fiction is alll about entertainment & escapism. Clive Cussler always manages both.

Original? No. Entertaining? Yes - By: Mr. G. Battle, 28 May 2007
Cussler freely admits that his character Dirk Pitt is simply a different slant on the Bond genre. His adventures (which begin in this book, although released after Mayday) are steeped in cliche (you name it, it's in there), peppered with girls fallling at his feet & wrapped in the plan of a diabolical mastermind. It's entertaining & easy to read, & although it's a bit too formulaic, it's definitely worth whiling away an afternoon with this short & care-free novel.
Excellent Read - By: , 14 Jan 2006
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it & am glad to find a good, well researched & entertaining adventure/thriller at last. The main character, Dirk Pitt is a believable hero with a wry sense of humour & endless determination.
I am now going to happily start working my way through the rest of the series & if you have never read a Dirk Pitt book before, then start with this one & enjoy, you have a treat in store !
Absolutley Amazing Escapist Fiction - By: Edmund Dantes, 21 Nov 2005
Sit down in a quiet room, put your feet up & open the cover of Clive Cussler's "Pacific Vortex". This is an excellent introduction to the world famous Dirk Pitt series of adventures which is an amazingingly consistent body of work. This book is so easy to read many people can get through it in an afternoon, & you will definatley want to. This is fast paced action & gritty stuff, one of the more darker books in the series it is top notch for introducing Dirk Pitt. Whilst the books that follow this one go further in building character depth & have more complicated plot lines in them this is an absolute read for alll budding adventure fans !! Buy this book & get hooked like millions of us have.
