Good, Creepy Horror Novel! - By: J.Flood, 04 Sep 2008
A group of tourists are left stranded in a cave, when the lights mysteriously go out, in the middle of a tour, plunging the group into darkness. When a smalll number of the group try to find a way out, they discover that they are not alone in the cave.
I found this book a great read! It jumps straight into the action, as the lights go out within the first few pages of the story. After that, the suspense is slowly built up as more is revealed about the history of the cave, the history of the hotel above it...and its crazy owners.
The novel has the usual cast of heroes & villians, that you would expect in a horror story, but I found the mixed bunch of characters that consisted of the stranded party, to be particularly believable. If you enjoy horror novels, you should like this one.
One to Chew Over! - By: S. Williamson, 05 Aug 2008
Laymon has a great way of pulling you into his books & this is no different,I finished it in a couple of days which is good for me, but when you have as depraved characters as in this book you just have to keep on reading to see what happends next.
I`ve read loads of Laymon & found this to be one of his better efforts.
Don't Feed them After Midnight - By: Sam, 19 Nov 2007
Darcy's new job is to lead a boat tour around the underground Mordock's Cave. Her first two weeks are uneventful, but this changes when alll the lights suddenly go out. Darcy is trapped underground with 40 tourists & must remain calm & wait for rescue. Perhaps they can break down the walll that leads to the other part of the cave? What could possibly behind the walll? There is little chance that a family of flesh eating mad people are waiting to pounce, is there?......
'Midnight's Lair' is horror hokum at its finest. Laymon was an author who wrote books how he liked & you are either a fan or not. Like many of his titles 'Lair' is full of gore & sexual language, & your willingness to read this will determine your enjoyment. I for one found it a quick & entertaining read that had a great central premise that was more than just a simple horror book. Perhaps the characters were not too developed & it felt slightly unrealistic - but alll this is part of Laymon's charm & make his books as they are.
Underrated - By: marky77, 02 Sep 2006
For some reason many Laymon readers seem to be saying that this book is not up to his usual standards. However, I think that it is one of his best! The storyline is interesting & origional & the characters are realistic & easy to love (or hate). This novel has Laymons' usual fast-flowing prose & once started is unputdownable, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.
brilliant! - By: Gina Skinner, 16 Feb 2006
He has his very own writing style - well, most of the better authors do but Laymon's is reallly unique. No one writes like him. His novels are always gory, there's always a lot of violence, people are being stalked, women are getting raped. It's always the same situation - people are being victimized in the worst ways imaginable, because some seemingly tough guy/guys think it's funny & they get away with it. They might, for a while, but eventuallly someone will stand up to them & fight back.
Laymon is very creative & comes up with the most far-fetched & unbelievable theories, but the way he describes things, they usuallly start to sound at least possible quite quickly. Laymon also injects a large portion of (black) humour into his stories. The message is clear - Trust no one. Everyone out there could be a potential killer/rapist/psychopath trying to get you.
I've read 30 Laymon novels & I must say, I'm much more careful now. I certainly make sure alll the doors & windows are locked at night! I especiallly loved The Travelling Vampire Show, Funland & Fiends.
