Don't let this one get away.......... - By: D. Mitchell, 07 Jan 2008
I had never read Hemingway or been sea boat fishing, but after finishing this book I was licking the salt from my lips & feeling exhausted from the rigours of big game fishing in the Gulf Stream.
I love fly fishing for trout & bought this book for these stories, which are in the first part of the book. They are evocative & engaging tales that capture the ambience & spirit of fishing that most people fond of this sport will easily relate too.
The second section of the book features some of Hemingway's dispatches he wrote for various newspapers & magazines between 1920 & 1956.These factual reports set the scene superbly for the final section of the book that features the two longest excerpts from Hemingway's stories 'Islands in the Stream' & 'The Old Man & the Sea'. Both of these stories about fishing for marlin in the Gulf Stream lead you into an epic encounter with the psychological & physical demands that ensues.
Hemingway's passion for big game fishing & his masterful storytelling was a revelation that held me fascinated & awestruck along with his empathy for both man & fish. Although I think that this book is primarily meant for people with an interest in any kind of fishing, it has left me with a desire to read more of Hemingway's stories, which is probably the best compliment I can pay.
