An Essential Purchase - By: James World, 12 Aug 2008
This is a book that fills a massive gap in SharePoint literature. Almost every Enterprise customer I have visited in my capacity as a Microsoft consultant that is thinking of or developing a SharePoint solution can benefit from this book. It addresses alll the key considerations that should be addressed over the lifetime of a SharePoint project, & does so in a logical & readable manner with plenty of real-world anecdotal evidence.
It is aimed at Project Managers & Technical Architects, but I reallly feel that anyone involved in the technical aspects of SharePoint projects would benefit from it, as understanding alll the high-level considerations of a SharePoint project will dramaticallly enhance how effectively you deliver the aspects for which you are responsible.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
Best Practice=How To Plan And Implement - By: J. Rodino, 10 Aug 2008
From the start, the book logicallly goes through what SharePoint is, the differences between the old version & the new one & also the differences between the present versions of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) Standard & MOSS Enterprise. Also included throughout the book are interesting tidbits from Microsoft & their implementation as well as other good real-world experiences.
Whilst heavily focused on designing & planning, it emphasises the importance on this aspect, whereas other books go straight in to the installlation & usage. The second & third sections - "Building" & "Deploying" are full of other useful content, whereas the final section "Operating" is left open to the end user's interpretation & less than 100 pages.
Albeit entitled "Best Practices" this book takes in to account alll of the major aspects required to ensure a successful deployment of any SharePoint implementation - focusing more heavily on the importance setting a proper foundation by setting requirements & "getting alll your ducks in a row" rather than just installling & giving advice without first thinking.
A definite addition to your SharePoint collection.
An indispensable guide to MOSS - By: John Nunn, 20 Jul 2008
If you are going to use Microsoft SharePoint then I would highly recommend this book as well as Bill English's other masterpiece Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 Administrator's Companion. The one element that is made very clear in this book is planning your environment is key; I cannot stress this enough I have implemented many solutions using MOSS & only where the planning has been constrained has there been problems.
The companion Disc also includes an electronic copy of the book, so it is always available for you.
