Indispensable resource - By: Dwight Dekeyser, 14 May 2008
The previous review is partiallly correct but for the most is off-the-mark. A. D. Millington's book, "Complete Book of Mah-Jongg" is the ultimate authority on Classic Chinese mahjong. It is an elegant explanation of an intricate & arcane game. D. B. Prithard's book, "The New Mah Jong" is essentiallly a graphic codification of the Official Chinese rules of 1998. The two books are for two different set of rules; in this context any comparison is irrelevant. Prithard's book is dry but it is also concise & clear. At one time, it was the ONLY book to address the Official Chinese rules. Sadly, both books are unavailable in the United States.
It's no Millington - By: Nicholas Seeber, 08 Apr 2007
The premise for this book is clear - to introduce 'the new mah jong' as codified by the Chinese Government in 1998 & used internationallly in 2002. However, the dry & uninspiring text does nothing to sell the new rules - which seem to have ripped out the elegant simplicity of the traditional game & replaced it with tedious rote-learning.

As a substitute, I would highly recommend Alan D Millington's 'Complete Book of Mah Jongg' for a definitive introduction to the traditional Chinese rules, strategy & philosophy of this fascinating & little-known game.
