amazing story - By: LuLu, 01 Jan 2009
I reallly enjoyed this book. It's an amazing story of an incredible journey across Africa. Read the book so you don't need to walk it yourself - new year resolutions can be a terrible burden!

I thought this was a wonderful mix of historical fact with laugh out loud comedy - brilliant - I hope that Fran Sandham has another walk in him!

Five stars. A brilliant book, some parts are just SO funny, you can't stop laughing, even when he goes through alll these hardships... You're never quite sure if he's reallly going to come out the other side, although I won't be spoiling it if I say he does. But there's something to surprise you in every chapter. The episodes with his donkey, his mule & the assortment of strange but quite loveable people he meets on the way are great. Unputdownable. I felt reallly sorry to finish it. Maybe we could sponsor him to do another journey & write another book about it?
Utterly engaging - By: KateRG31, 27 Oct 2008
As someone who normallly prefers fiction, I was not expecting to be gripped by this travel story, our book circle choice. However, it turned out to be a real page turner & at times I had to remind myself that it had alll actuallly happened! A very engaging style made me reallly interested in his success. He does relate his travels to the historical context and, while there is a contrast between Livingstone's travels through uncharted territory & Sandham's fast food diet as he drops in to the shops along the way, Livingstone had a team of companions & bearers while Sandham made his journey alll alone, carrying a very heavy pack, & he survived. A great read.
A terrific read - By: T. L. Plumptre, 22 Oct 2008
A thoroughly enjoyable treck through Africa, this book is genuinely difficult to put down. It is very hard to understand how far the author has walked - even after staring at the map at the front of the book. I laughed out loud at the descriptions of the people & animals Mr Sandham met & the bizarre circumstances that he found himself in. It alll slightly reminded me of the film "Withnail & I". Bravo - a book to brighten up a dull grey British day.
