Gossipy little volume about grub street - By: , 12 Apr 2001
Alan Watkins has spent most of his life working on Fleet street. In this book he recounts various "inside" stories about prominent figures, both in journalism & in politics. Though he doesn't take himself too seriously, it is obvious that many people in his "profession" do have an inflated impression of their own importance. What comes across is how easily information (or disinformation) can be obtained for the cost of a good lunch; indeed alcohol & expense accounts seem to be the lubrication for most of what the general public are told by politicians & their mouth-pieces, political journalists. Mr Watkins also writes about rugby: at least in this his readers can see what has been going on, in contrast to politics. The book is an easy read & has a few chuckles.
