Day Skipper - By: Stephen Coles, 03 Nov 2006
I am disappointed in this book. It makes references to information which is not available, or to charts not provided. It is difficult to go back & forth between charts, extracts & text. It seems to lack some of the knowledge required on lights & symbols.
Good prep - By: G. WILLIAMS, 28 Oct 2006
I bought this book after going on a sailing trip. I worked through alll the problems & completed the seperate exercises book (both have a sample exercise chart included so I don't know what the last reviewer was talking about!).
Unfortunately work pressures stopped me sailing for 6 years, but then I managed to fit a comp crew course in. And because of this book & this book alone I found I actuallly had enough knowledge to fulfil the Day Skipper requirements & I got that qualification instead. Nice. Buy this & do some non-assesed sailing. Experience & knowledge combined will get you through.
Not the best book - By: , 05 Nov 2005
I cannot agree with the two previous reviewers. I found this book a dissapointment. It is just a complete rush through alll the important subjects with very poor explainations. It is very badly written, & the constant need to keep refering from the text to "extracts" at the back pages is frustrating. The book is padded out with a large Glossary of words than any sailor should well know by this stage of their education.
The worked examples are impossible to properly follow without having to hand the proper actual charts that they refer to.
The "exam" questions & "answers", are a usefull indication of the knowledge required for this subject, but will appeal, I feel, to those who think that knowledge of a few answers will make them sailors, without a true understanding of the subjects.
If you are serious about understanding the subject, for the safety at sea of yourself & others, I suggest there must be better books than this one you could aquire
Best book around - By: , 27 Aug 2002
Have just done the course, & this book was the best by a distance. It has alll the detail you need & tough exercises that make the actual exam seem easy!
A clear and usefull reference book for would be Day Skippers - By: hpfrs@hotmail.com, 03 Dec 2001
Having signed up for the RYA Dayskippers course (evening class-28weeks) I felt i needed a much more thorough guide book than that supplied with the RYA course material & this book was highly recommended by the course tutor, himself an RYA/DOT Ocean Yachmaster.

The book covers alll aspects of the course clearly & comprehensively. It is easy to followand understand & has plenty of illustrations & examples to help the student. There are also sample questions at the end of each chapter along with the answers at the back of the book. A good buy.
