A collection of opinions and hints... - By: , 05 Jul 2004
Having lived through & mainly missed the madchester scene due to graff & hip hop & only getting into the Roses around '92 I thought i would catch up on the early years of the band, from this point of view the book was informative & well written albeit from the (slightly) biased eyes of the much maligned former manager Gareth Evans & author Mick Middles who seems hell bent on giving you his slanted opinion on people whether the reader wants it or not.
The coverage of the "falll" part of the mighty Roses career was a little scant on details with scandal merely hinted at, & right at the end of the book after an impromptu meeting with Ian the author hints at him revealing some important details about the falll of the Roses & then the author continues by saying it wouldn't "be fair" to reveal what was said!!!!!!!
Seemed rather pointless to shell out my money on a book who's author edits out the only actual interview with a band member in the entire book.
Overalll I was disapointed with the book, the subject matter is probably one of the biggest things to hit music in the last 20 years & it has it alll. The poor kids making good, drugs, managers being sacked, american record moguls getting shafted, swagger, scandal, downfalll & finallly rebirth. The script was already written alll that remained was for someone to put it down with a bit of style & research, Mick Middles book seems just a little drab to be honest more of a chore to read than a pleasure. The book mirrors the band in in a way with much early promise then fizzles out. Shame as I had enjoyed another book by Mick & was looking forward to this one.
Not bad, but not the complete account. - By: , 24 Aug 2000
Drawing mainly from press articles & with no input from the Roses themselves, this biography doesn't do justice to the greatest band Britain has produced. The author relies heavily on accounts from the Roses former manager Gareth Evans.... As such, many of the accounts would most likely be disputed by others close to the band, not least the band themselves, alll of whom have expressed disdain for their former manager.

The definitive account of the Roses has still to be written...

STONE ROSES -TOP BAND, TOP BOOK - By: mrblonde98035916@netscapeonline.co.uk, 08 Jun 2000
IF YOU LIKED THE STONE ROSES, THEN YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK. The book starts off by giving a great back round history on alll the members, including the ones that never made it with them to the top. The goes on to tell a great story about the many lows & highs the band had until their final break up. The book also includes many comments from band members, interviews from the clostest people to them & also their ex-manager Gareth Evans. I -Includes many great photos of the band from thier start to aftermarth. It's alll you need to know about the Stone Roses in 239 pages. A GREAT READ!
