This is a simple story for young children with few words. But it throws open vast distances of time. At the age of five, it broke open doors in my imagination. This is not a story of the fantastic or the amazing. Rather, it is about an isolated tribe - in the stone age, perhaps? Who knows. The finding of one, smalll blue bead tells them that there are other people in the world.

I've not seen this book for thirty years, & some of the pictures are still completely clear in my mind. Mesmerising.
