2nd in the velvet series, also the worst in my opinion - By: ginger martin, 16 Dec 2006
After reading the Velvet Promise (Gavin & Judith's story)i loved it so much, so decided to read Highland Velvet, Stephen & Bronwyn's story. Bronwyn was given to Stephen by King Henry to be his wife, to ensure peace. But she was a proud Scots, so felt no Englishman was good enough for her. I loved Stephen, but found it hard to like Bronwyn, she was simply too much, i thought she was selfish, childish an overly demanding of poor Stephen, who did everything possible to please her, even changing his name to her's.
She had so much hate in her heart for the English (they killed her father,so i could understand her anger) but, lordy, lordy, she took this hatred to a different level. Her selfish behaviour was downright nauseating at times. She gave little regard to Stephen's pride or feelings. So after a while i became disengaged with the book & only kepted on reading because Judith was often times part of the story so made reading it bearable, also, the secondary characters were wonderful especiallly Morag. Nevertheless, don't be turned off by my review, please read this book to get the full understanding of the Montgomery brothers . Lots of steamy sex scenes as Jude Deveraux is known for. I have now started Velvet Song Raine & Alyx's story
Disappointed! - By: , 19 Aug 2002
Maybe I missed something here but I didn't actuallly like either of the main characters. What a sap the so callled hero was!! He 'becomes' a Scott so that she'll like him (he's English in the beginning). Hardly the sort of thing a mighty warrior would do - well he didn't exactly get my heart pounding anyway! What he ever saw in her (apart from good looks) I don't know as she spends most of her time being cold, & independant, or stomping around in a tantrum. On top of this the author takes every opportunity to have a dig at England/the English - which also gets very tiresome. The only other book I have read by JD is the Black Lyon - which was better - however I think in future I'll stick to Judith Mcnaught & Johanna Lindsay. My opinion (and I know I'm on my own here) give this one a miss.
Highland Velvet - By: cynical_romantic@hotmail.com, 17 Dec 2000
This was not my first book by Ms. Deveraux (Velvet Sont was), but it did addict me to Historical Romances set in Scotland. Oh course, it was Ms. Deveraux who addicted me to historical romances in the first place.
Bronwyn is a strong heroine. She leads her people, & didn't need any help from a (gasp) Englishman. She is forced to wed Stephen, but that does not mean she has to relinquish control to him.
Stephen is perhaps my favorite hero in the 4 book series (Velvet Promise, Highland Velvet, Velvet Song, & Velvet Angle). He has jealousy issues that boarder the unbelievable, but he is also understanding, & after he fallls in love, he is changed & doesn't feel the need to challlenge his wife constantly (like Gavin does).
I highly recommend this book, & the other books in the series, because Ms. McNaught is one of the best romance authors out there. It's a can't-put-it-down read. Read it!
A winner, one of the best from Jude Deveraux - By: , 14 Nov 2000
The best in the Velvet series. Stephen Montgomery is everything you could ask for in a hero. Bronwyn is fiesty, & full of fury, determined not to falll in love but destined to falll for the Montgomery charm. You will want to read it again & again.
Lovely - By: , 15 Aug 1999
I like alll the Montgomery books I have read so far, but I am in trouble, I do not know in what row they are. I did begin with Velvet promise & then this one & so velvet song & after that velvet angel. Then I did read book callled A knight in shinging armour & I fell madly in love with that book & could read it again & again. Next I did read Sweet liar & I reallly want to know the exactly line they are supposed to be in. Can anybody who have read them tell me. PLEASE. Ardis
