Fast and Furiously Delicious Recipes. - By: Themis-Athena, 15 Jun 2004
I'm a Cornell grad, & one thing I remember with particular pleasure about my time in Ithaca, NY are those occasional forays down the Hill for lunch or (more likely) dinner at Moosewood, for years one of *the* local standout restaurants. Although not a vegetarian, I try not to eat meat every day of the week; & for a tasty, healthy alternative, there just isn't anything better than Moosewood's recipes. No question that I had to get their cookbook - several of them, actuallly - before I finallly left town.

"Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home" begins with two short introductory sections about the use of time & nutritional analysis. The recipes are then grouped into individuallly introduced sections covering soups, dips, spreads & quick breads, salads & sides, dressings, salsas & sauces, main dish salads, gains, beans, pastas, stews, stir-fries & sautes, fish, sandwiches, filled tortillas, & pizzas, eggs & pancakes, & desserts. The book closes with a pantry list, a guide to ingredients, chapters on preparation & techniques, fresh herbs, menu planning & quantities (including liquid & dry measure & temperature conversion tables - particularly helpful for those of us who live in a "metric system" country); as well as a number of special lists, grouping the featured recipes according to their qualification as nondairy & vegan, kid-pleasers, recipes preparable in 30 minutes or less, & recipes suitable for entertaining, buffets & pot-lucks. What I like most about this book - besides the overalll outstanding quality of the recipes & the fact that most of them are very quick & easy to prepare - are the countless little insider tips regarding the shopping for as well as preparation & storage of individual dishes & their combination with other dishes or ingredients, in addition to the background information on the names, provenance & cultural context of the many Non-Western recipes (not to mention that so many of those recipes are included in the first place).

It's hard for me to pick a personal favorite; there are so many ... for soups, I guess I'd pick the Mexican tomato lime soup, for dips the spicy peanut dip, for sides the mushrooms in lemon marinade, for dressings either the creamy pine nut vinaigrette or the lemon sesame dressing, for sauces the hazelnut & red peppers sauce, for main dish salads the sweet potato salad, for grains the herbed lemon pilaf with almonds ... & for salsas, pastas, stews, tortillas, pizzas, eggs, pancakes & desserts, every single one! (Sorry, reallly can't make up my mind there; it's more a question of mood and, of course, what ingredients I happen to have handy.) But whether you're just cooking for yourself or for family & friends, there should be something for everyone in this book; regardless whether you are vegetarian/vegan or not. Highly recommended!

This is a great source for quick, tasty recipes. The ingredient lists are relatively short & easy, & the dishes are unique & flavorful. The Spicy Corn Quesadillas recipe is particularly good. This book is for the busy cook who loves good food!
A joy of a book - By: , 04 Mar 1999
Bought this book when it first came out, from the start every recipe was a joy to prepare, to serve, & eat. Even my finicky children love everything we have prepared from this book. There are some wonderfully different, yet simple, recipes. All can be prepared quickly with excellent results. If I was forced to choose only one cookbook to keep, it would be this one. Lali
ANOTHER GLOWING REVIEW! - By: , 05 Nov 1998
I own many cookbooks, but this is the one I use most often. I cannot praise it highly enough.

If you think you don't have time to cook, this book may prove you wrong. Most of the recipes can be prepared easily, from ingredients you probably have in your pantry, in less time than it takes to order a cheese pizza from Dominos.

This is my all-time favorite cookbook! - By: , 02 Nov 1998
I cook from this cookbook 2-3 times a week & have not yet hit a recipe that I didn't love. It is the best cookbook in my collection & I'm not even vegetarian! This cookbook has my family eating greens, brown rice & other whole foods & loving it.
