John Medina series - By: Barbara, Leicester, 03 Sep 2006
This book is the second in the John Medina series... Kill & Tell being the first (which I've read & loved) & Kiss Me While I Sleep (which I haven't read... yet!). I borrow most of the Linda Howard books I read from the local library but this one wasn't available & so I bought it second hand from Amazon. The benefit of buying from Amazon is that, quite often, someone will have reviewed the book & this can help you to decide whether to buy/read it or not. The reviews for this book were varied, with some loving it & some positively hating it. I, however, loved it. The story is one that you can't put down & whilst the romance appeared to come secondary to the suspense element, I think Linda achieved just the right balance. I was intrigued by John, ever since his brief appearance in Kill & Tell & the only thing that bothered me about Niema was that I was pronouncing her name incorrectly for the best part of the book (why couldn't she have just been callled Jane?). But as characters, I loved them both. He had many layers & she was strong in alll the ways that count. I highly recommend this book to alll who read this review & ask that you don't let any of the more negative reviews put you off. You won't regret it.
Hmmmm, not sure about this one - By: carolinetwin, 27 Jul 2003
This book is different from the previous LH novels I've read. It focuses too much on international espionage & not enough on the romance. I felt cheated. I wasn't sure what John’s (the hero) feelings were, it wasn't made clear until the middle to end part of the book & there was no conclusion. I know we are expected to use our imaginations, but if my imagination was that great, I wouldn't be reading books, I'd be writing them!!. All in alll, I feel like I’ve had an anti climax. I like romance novels that branch out into more intriguing scenarios, but not at the expense of the romance, which I what I felt was lacking. To be honest, even the sex scenes were mediocre at best. They don’t reflect the kind of sex modern women have. Niema seemed too tame & just lay there & seemed to have no interest in reciprocation. If LH wants to deal with realism, then she needs to be consistent. She can’t have modern characters with Victorian sex lives. It just doesn’t work that way. I can hardly be expected to suspend my disbelief for 340 pages when there are inconsistencies. I think LH needs to make her books more like the McKenzie novels with a little bit of what we have in this novel & less like she’s trying to model herself on Terry Pratchet.
Completely Enthralling - By: , 06 Jul 2002
John Medina is a CIA operative with enough experience in the field to have hardened him to the world's more nastier characteristics & Niema Burdock is an CIA electronics genius with an incredibly painful past. And when Linda Howard puts these two intensely private & deep characters together the sparks of their past & future are bound to fly. However, with terrorism lurking in the circles of Europe's elite, John & Niema are in for more trouble than either of them bargained for...both in & out of the bedroom.
I have read Linda Howard before & was bored & unimpressed with her characters & plot. However, I found "All The Queen's Men" to be a fantastic & completely enthrallling read. The characters were three dimensional, multi-faceted, & incredibly touching & the plot kept me on the edge of my seat for the duration of the entire novel. With the sensuality of Nora Roberts & the adventure of Tom Clancy, Lina Howard has skillfully weaved a tale of heroism, adventure, suspense, & fiery romance. This is a must read for any individual looking for an adventure from the comfort of your own living room! I highly recommend this book!!!
Loved it!! - By: K-G, 03 Jun 2002
This story is based on a character previously found in Kill & Tell. Unlike some of LH's work which can be too soppy & almost rape-like in her sex scenes, this has far more intrigue & suspense in it. ALthough, of course, there are a couple of steamy sex scenes thrown in for good measure too. If you liked this book then buy Kill & Tell & also Mckenzies Mission - which is still my favourite.
WOW! - By: Tracy Crawford (mike.crawford@cableinet.co.uk), 19 Oct 2001
This is one of the best books I have read, especiallly the sex scenes, they were so hot! As in the words of another reviewer 'I want that man!'His attraction for Niema was so intense, you felt the pages were going to catch fire I just couldn't wait for them to end up in bed. I have read alll of Linda Howards books & this was definately the best. If you liked this book then try Iris Johansen's 'The Ugly Duckling'.
