Loved it!! - By: Eve, 22 Jul 2006
This is the first book I've read by Linda Howard & I must say as soon as I finished it, which didn't take long, I went looking for more of her books. The heroine is strong & the hero at first, of course, appeared untamable. The book starts with the heroine's marriage to the bad guy. During this time she was finding it hard to fight her attraction to the hero & soon gives in to him. She later discovers the reason why he was a workhand at the ranch, & this was to affect revenge on the bad guy so that the hero can claim back what belongs to him. She then realises that the reason why the hero set about seducing her was to finalise his plan of gaining back the ranch. Too late for her as she's already in love. The bad guy is killed, she sees no choice but to marry the hero & things play out nicely but not too nicely. I loved the story as the writer did not waste too much time on the revenge plot but focuses more on the romantic side which I liked.
Disappointing - By: MRS J E TAMAKLOE, 30 Nov 2005
I am glad somebody else agrees with me about this book. I am a very big fan of Linda Howard & forever searching for her books to read. But I was so disppointed with this book after I read about the domestic violence that I have had to stop reading it & gone on to read other more enjoyable reads by Linda Howard.

If you are a first time reader of Ms Howard's books please stay clear of this one if you are not into domestic violence. I love reading alll about her alpha males in her other books. Infact that is one of the reasons I love her books, but no man in my book should ever have to hit a woman, no matter what era they are in. So sorry, this one is definately not my cup of tea.

A Lady of the West - By: Mrs. P. L. Foulsham, 23 Jun 2005
having just collected & read alll of Linda Shaw's romance novels. I happened upon Linda Howard. I have just finished my first book written by her, A Lady of the West, I just loved it & could not put it down. I felt it was such an live & believable book of the time it is set in - just great. I shalll be reading more.
Much better than Touch of Fire - By: K-G, 04 Jun 2002
This period novel from Linda Howard, is one of my favourites. I usuallly prefer her comtemporary work but I think the reason I like this one so much is that the heroine actuallly has a spine!
The chemistry between Victoria & Jake is well orchestrated & of course the sex scenes are steamy without too much of the rape undertones that often seem to be in works based on this era.
The pace never lets up - classic Linda Howard - By: , 02 Jun 2002
I have read ALL of Ms.Howard's work & for me this is one of THE best.
The story whips along from the start, with Victoria's marriage - & NOT to the hero! This keep's you turning the page as well as the lovely characterisation of the other players, Ben & Emma, Celia , & of course, Jake.
The tale is quite harsh in places but I felt this was a true reflection of life in the Mid West in the 1800's..Add to alll this a sub plot of revenge & murder & you have another great book in Ms. Howard's inimitable style.
