It's an adventure Jim, but not as we know it! - By: A. D. Mcalister, 29 Sep 2007
Come on, we know Bill's not the master penman we are lead to believe. His collaboration with Reeves-Garfield makes his ego driven space saga believable (for Star Trek that is). The book is a good read that much is certain, but my one complaint that is with alll Kirk novels is that practicallly every chapter ends with the words James T KIrk. The man's ego knows no bounds. You can almost hear him say it aloud as if he were still acting the part. Overalll, a necessary part of your Star Trek collection & the best of the trilogy.
Brilliant continuation - By: , 14 Aug 2000
This book continues on the story line started in Spectre & the plot remains intresting, the only bad point is that you have to buy a third book to find out what happens because it would of been better if the third book could of been included in the second book, I hope the next book preserver is just as good.
Enjoyable but not much plot - By: , 29 Jan 2000
I've read alll William Shatner's previous Trek novels, & whilst I hadn't been impressed by his last one, SPECTRE, I thought I'd give him another chance. DARK VICTORY is an improvement on its predecessor (although that isn't reallly saying much), but the plot is much weaker. If this were a movie, it'd be one of those where you could falll asleep for half an hour & not miss anything. Sometimes it feels like you're reading a short story padded out to 300 pages. But that said, Shatner's writing style seems to have improved somewhat (although he still has an annoying habit of using sentences of 2 or 3 words which mess up the rhythm of the text), & the chapters set aboard DS9, with Garak, capture the character so perfectly that you can almost hear Andrew Robinson speaking the lines. The novel is worth buying for these alone, but wait until it's out in paperback first.
Characters spot on, story a little weaker - By: , 12 Oct 1999
I was surprised when I picked up The Return many moons ago to discover that Bill can actuallly write a good Star Trek novel. The characters are nearly perfect & everything's so familiar you can sit down & read it alll in one go. In Dark Victory a chase ensues between Kirk & his nemesis Tiberius whilst in the background is the mysterious & suspicious covert Starfleet organisation Project Sign. The story doesn't live up to the predecessors in the sequence (The Return, Avenger & Spectre) & barely plods along in areas. Still, if you do read those books (and you should) then you'll have to read this too which is no bad thing.
