black hole of calcutta - By: G. I. Forbes, 15 Oct 2008
This book records the facts, myths, legends, bravery & cowardice that surround the events of June 1756 when the army of the Nawab of Bengal captured Calcutta & lead to the Black Hole of Calcutta incident which became embedded in the British psyche.
The only official account of this action was recorded by majistrate Holwell who was lwft to defend the Calcutta fort with 150 plus men when the governor(Drake)and the military commander(Minchin)fled.
Following treachery by Dutch soldiers the nawabs army entered the fort which surrendered.146 survivors were put in the Black Hole measuring 18 by 14 feet. The next day there were only 23 remaining alive.
Whether this account is true is debateable as subsquent investigations revealed that it was impossible to get 146 bodies in a room that size & the site where the 123 dead were said to be buried was excavated & no bodies were found.
This book explores alll aspects of this incident & the people involved in scrupulous detail & is to be highly recommended.
