Kurts Journals - By: , 29 Mar 2004
When people think of Kurt Cobain they think of a rock star heroine junkee who killed him self. people like this reallly annoy because they fail to look at how Kurt was reallly a genius in his own write. He of often scribled things down on pieces of paper & in note pads. When reading his journals you can tell that he wanted them to be read by someone. it also shows kurts ups & downs in his life which usallly relates back to his child hood. It shows a strange almost insane personality & i would rewccomend it to anyone who is a fan of of 90s rock & anyone who is intresated in rock history because even if axl rose liked it or not nirvana was a huge turning point in rock.
cynical in the extreme - By: , 12 Nov 2003
If Cobain is up there somewhere he will point at this book & then point at the "Nevermind" album cover & shout "this is what I mean!". This is cynical & disingenuous marketing in the extreme. From the portentious title "Journals" (in order to pass this off as some heavy weight tome) to the culling of anything that belonged to this artist - absolute publishing necrophilia. Shame on those credulous critics who could not see through the marketing & shame on the publishers. A curse on both their houses. Go for Heavier Than Heaven.
Dilemma.. - By: S. Yogendra, 20 Oct 2003
I bought this book right after it came out. I read it during moments snatched from days & nights of a lot of academic work. When you open the book, it warns you 'not to read the diary when I (Kurt Cobain) am gone..' but my curiosity got the better of me. I read on to find a rather articulate & meticulous person (who else will make a checklist for every stop of the tour bus that includes 'check oil' & 'check tyres'?) quite different from the drugged persona that means a rock star to you & me. A chronicle of the way Kurt Cobain changed over time, it makes you wonder about 'success' in general & 'rock star success' in specific. Curiously there can be deep introspective moments but that was just my experience.

Strangely enough just around that time, we were discussing the changing concept of copyright in network economics. Besides I am deeply interested in privacy technologies & the social debate around it. In alll, I experienced a terrible dilemma with this book - by buying this, was I aiding & abetting privacy violation (even posthumous) or copyright violation (since these are not Courtney Love's diaries so how could she publish them???).. Any guesses?

Read it only if you can deal with the conflicting emotions that rightly overcome you when you read someone's diary without their knowledge or consent.. 4 stars for the depressing times this caused me, when I could least afford the time..

wasn't a fan 'til i read this - By: J. Preston, 22 Apr 2003
i bought this book mainly due to the hype & also because i had gift vouchers that came to the amount & the store had nothing else that caught my attention so much.
i had read Q magazine & read the hype about the release of Kurt's journals but i barely knew anything about their music (fallling slightly out of the age category of most fans)although i did know a few songs. i had on the other hand heard about Kurt's death & the suspicous circumstance surrounding it, Also his drug use.Despite knowing nothing i found this to be one of the greatest things i've read - better than any kind of traditional auto biographical books. of course there is a rather perverse sense to reading what is essentiallly someone's diary, but it is truely honest. i found it insightful & turned me into a nirvana fan overnight.
It becomes very deep, detailing his lowest points. i found it conforting that someone so famous was just the same as everyone else.
my only problem with this book is the money & invasion of privacy that has occoured.
Good read but could be improved! - By: , 18 Apr 2003
Overalll I think that this book was interesting as it shows us kurt's thoughts & feelings & his opinions on different issues such as drugs, rock music, people in general & other aspects of life too. I think the only down-side to this book is that there is no order to the entries, I mean they alll talk about different things & are in no order what-so-ever which spoils it a bit as you cant see what he is referring to unless you flick to the back of the book to the index which then tells you a bit about what he is talking about. I think that they could've also presented it a little better as some of the entries were reallly smalll & were quite difficult to read. Overalll though I did enjoy reading this & couldn't put it down as it was interesting as it was written by Kurt himself & were alll his personal thoughts, feelings & opinions - which was nice. So yes I do recommend this book to any fan of nirvana and/or Kurt Cobain as it is an interesting read.
