The greatest book ever! - By: , 30 Jan 1999
This book is great & can be enjoyed by people who like math & those who don't. I read it to my fifth grade class & we laughed so hard that we had to read other books by Scieszka & Smith. We are true fans & look forward to new releases by the two. P.S. If you liked this book, check out the Time Warp Trio series. You'll love them too!
Fourth graders really responded! - By: , 14 Jan 1999
I shared this book with fourth graders (I am a school media specialist/librarian) & they LOVE it. They check the shelf daily to see if a copy is available & fight over it if it is there. Possibly works best with adult introduction, but it's FUN!
Great book, but Amazon.com has reading level listed wrong! - By: , 12 Dec 1998
I have a computer science degree, so have taken a LOT of math, & enjoyed most of it. My two children, ages 9 & 11, have mixed feelings about math. All three of us enjoyed Math Curse immensely. The reviewer who said it would alienate children is dead wrong; & the one who complained about repetition must be missing a lot of the book. There's new surprises on every page. Even the price on the jacket is funny! One problem: Amazon.com recommends this book for ages 4-8. That should be corrected to grades 4-8. It's definitely not for the 'Goodnight Moon' set. I'm about to ignore the age/grade recommendations, anyway, & buy a copy for my math-loving teenage nephew. I'm betting he'll get a big kick out of its irreverence & math in-jokes.
I love this book - By: , 27 Aug 1998
I'm a math major & during my classroom observations, I read this book to 4th graders & they loved it. The teacher ask me to stay & read it to the 5th & 6th graders. The book is illustrated beautifully & it reallly makes students & adults understand that math is a part of our every day life. I love the way the authors relate every aspect of the book to math: the price of the book is an addition problem, the price is also in available in binary, it's for ages >6 & <99!!! The fact that Mrs. Fibonacci is her teach is just too cool! I've become a math lunatic myself. Thanks to the authors for such grand creativity!
math is fun!!! - By: , 23 Jun 1998
I read & reread "Math Curse" to my 8 & 10 year old with relish. We tried to answer alll the puzzles, laughed at the absurdities, & generallly had a wonderful time. I am a huge advocate of anything that makes math enjoyable, & I was particularly impressed by the author's ability to introduce higher math concepts without any fanfare. We have ransacked the local library for more from this author, & we have not been disappointed. This one is a keeper!
