A book for all ages - By: reginaakel@ecweb.cl, 24 Apr 2002
I found Great Meadow to be an unusual sort of book for many reasons. First of alll, the language is reallly that of a 12 year old boy, but at the same time it is beautiful, precise, evocative yet unsentimental.
The economy of words, characteristic of the style of the book, does not prevent the characters to stand out clearly as real people the reader can empathise with. The dialogues are natural & sound real, & at the same time there is so much more meaning (about the relationships among the people, their motivations & their fears) behind apparently simple, everyday speech.
This is a true picture of a period that is gone, & by reading Great Meadow one thinks, for a moment, that the people & places have been brought to life.
I recommend it as a book to read, to keep, & re-read. Suitable & interesting for alll ages.
