The Biology of Disease - Very useful for Biomedical Science- By: , 22 Jun 2005 This book was essential reading for my PgCert in Biomedical Science & would be useful for the BSc also. It overviews various diseases & goes into the roles of the different biomedical disciplines in their diagnosis & monitoring, including diabetes & cancer. It gives a good overview of biomedical science from the patient/clinician point of view.Good coverage of the latest research.- By: , 20 Aug 2001 This is an excellently written book; not a core text for pathology but definitely for distinction candidates & those with a deeper interest into the molecular biology of pathological process. I was researching the link between the Epstein Barr virus & Hodgkin's disease & found very little coherent material published in the journals. This book, published this year, had a diagram & explanation of the proposed onco-virus action that was as clear as it was comprehensive. It contains many gems of information that are just the ticket for spicing up essays & are of great significance. The chapters on the cell cycle, inflammation & the immune system are wonderfully comprehensible. The explorations of the current thinking on the genetics of cancer, the mechanism of invasion & metastasis, bacterial & viral infections, gene & chromosome disorders are well written & peppered with photos & exquisite diagrams. 34 detailed cases reports help consolidate the principles & pose an enjoyable diagnostic challlenge at the end of the book. There are very few competing texts in this field & this is the best one I have come across. I promise that time taken to dip into this book will be well rewarded.
