Believe me, there are better books than this... - By: Delirium The Girl, 21 Feb 2008
Although it is not necessarily a *bad* book, I don't believe it is cheap, or simple. Suggested simple meals are "jacket potatoes" & "poaches eggs", & suddenly the jump is made to the likes of "leeks baked with blue cheese" & "pumpkin goulash", which make up the bulk of the book. There are no real intermediate meals. Neither are the meals cheap
The lack of in-between cooking would be fine if something more exotic was what you wanted, but it's not appropriate in a student cook book. The same applies for the likes of the cocktail & juices section. It also does not help that there is no pictures within the book, which would be handy to know what the meal your cooking should look like.
What stops me giving this a lower rating is that there are some good recipes, such as the "sticky muesli bars". But please, don't think that you can leave home with limited cooking experience & that this will help you on you're way.
Everything you need, student or not - By: quill pen, 25 Sep 2007
My student days were over some 15 years ago, but I bought this book because I wanted to increase my repertoire of vegetarian meals. While I don't need to learn how to bake a potato, (which is included in this book) I wanted fairly easy recipes without hugely long ingredient lists. This cookbook suits the bill, perfectly. My Rose Elliot & Leith's veggie cookbooks are languishing in the cupboard barely used at present because I keep on going back to this one.
I've made several recipes so far. Most of them I found delicious & would definitely make again.
The marketing of this book is gimmicky - lots of bright colours, little buzzwords like 'fun, cheap, party' which may or may not appeal, I don't take much notice of it. Usuallly I prefer books with pictures to show the finished product, but I've generallly found the instructions easy enough to follow.
There are a couple of minor mistakes, like mentioning a 'cooking time' for hummous when it's made with tinned chickpeas, & I'm convinced that the fruit cake recipe doesn't ask for enough milk unless my scales are badly inaccurate. Because of that I'm giving it four stars rather than five, but most of the time it is very reliable.
Pobably best for rich students who don't have a clue!!! - By: Maximus, 06 Sep 2007
A dull & uninspriring recipe book that is either too expensive for normal students, or just plain boring. My suggestion is to avoid anything that says 'student' on it, & just go for normal veggie cookbooks that don't force us into stereotypes.
PLEASE BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!! - By: Jumping Bean, 03 Sep 2007
We came back from our holidays feeling digestively fantastic because of alll the fresh food we'd eaten in Turkey. I bought this book because l was a little bored with my veggie cookery books & l also wanted fresh, quick food after work so this is why l decided to buy this book! It is fantastic - lve cooked 5 meals (no duds yet) for my carnivour partner & myself & the meals are quick, nutrious & so easy to cater to your own taste! YOU HAVE GOT TO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Exceptional cookbook - By: theandrewssister, 02 Oct 2006
Sorry to add to the chorus of praise but this book reallly is remarkable - - don't quite know why! I am a cookery book addict -- I have shelves-full, alll of which looked wonderful at the time of buying but very, very few of the recipes I hve tried have made it into my everyday cooking. I bought this book recently, along with a couple of other veggie books, because we had a vegetarian au pair coming to work for us and, although we were committed carnivores ourselves at the time, I thought I'd like to learn a few recipes for her. Well, almost every recipe we have tried out of this book (about 12 so far) has been (a) delicious & (b) easy; we now eat vegetarian 99% of the time from choice as a result & my food bills have gone right down! Interestingly, the other two veggie books I bought, including one with a very similar title from a different publisher, have proved complete washouts & despite repeated read-throughs I've only used once each. Honestly, after literal years of wasting my money on one glossy cookbook after another I can tell you that this one is a class apart.
