As good an introduction as there is - By: Ian Bates, 30 Jul 2008
I build websites for a living & I hand code almost alll of the static ones. I bought this book for my wife & worked through it with her, so that she could help with general coding, & was taken back by how well the subject is tackled. It is a fun book that delivers a good depth of information & in a manner that sticks with the reader. I didn't have to supplement any of the explanations with more information, & the book did a far better job than I could have done at explaining the basics. Please understand that this book does not cover every aspect of the subject, & will not make you an advanced web coder, but it will equip you with the ability to design a decent web site & to delve much deeper into the subject without being put off by more technical aspects of the business.
After finishing this book, the only thing you will lack is experience, & that of course is as far as any book can take you.
If I taught this subject to students, then this would be the course text book.
Excellent learners book for designers and code newbies - By: Alexandra Rhind, 15 Dec 2007
Oh I wish I'd bought this book first! I've numerous HTML & CSS books on my shelves, but this is the book for learning just how to. It teaches good practice from the start, providing an excellent foundation for an area that is going to demand cleaner & compliant code.

It isn't a reference book: it's mission is to teach & it does so very well indeed. If you prefer to learn visuallly & actively, you will find this book particularly engaging.

Buy the pocket O'Reillys for reference, or the O'Reilly CSS & XHTML tomes (which are actuallly very accessible once you've worked through this book).
Reaches the parts other books can't - By: D. Briggs, 29 Jun 2007
I have just finished working through the book. I've created my first Web Site, & it's validated as XHTML 1.0 Strict with good CSS styling & accessibility! I didn't have had the expertise or confidence to do this previously, but I can do it by hand now with only a text editor (and a little bit of help from the book).

This is my first Head First book. The quirky style helps to get the information into your head & the numerous worked examples give confidence & a reluctance to stop at just ordinary, when extraordinary is not much further along. Top marks!
Brilliant! - By: Bean100, 23 Apr 2007
I love this book. I am new to this & bought 3-4 books & this is the one that has helped me the most. It explains the basics claerly, without jargon, & structures the leerning in a way that reallly suited me. The puzzles & 'interviews' seem irrelevant until you do them & realise later that you have remembered what you learnt from them. Highly recommended for those new to HTML & CSS.
