Wurts adds a wonderful new dimension - By: J. Ewing, 30 Jun 2008
Feists first outing with co-author Janny Wurts does not disappoint. I must admit I bought this book with a degree of scepticism- the two author thing had put me off for a while. Please don't make the same mistake- Wurts manages the unthinkable & helps Feist improve on his previous work. My other preconceived misgiving, I am ashamed to say, was that the lead is female. If you are in this same boat- please climb out now. Mara is a fantastic heroin whose story you cannot fail to be gripped by. And in any case- there are many wonderful male characters (Keyoke & Arakasi to name just two) who would be strong lead characters in their own right! The plots are complex & clever without ever being overwhelming- I urge you to read this.
NB- 'Magician' by Feist is certainly a pre-requisite for this book.
A great writer - By: J. C. Edwards, 24 Mar 2008
I have read alll of the titles writte by Mr Feist & he has never written a bad book. If you see his name as author just read the book. Best read in the order of publication but this Empire trilogy pretty much stands alone. I would recommend starting with Magician if you can.
A favourite - By: MKJ, 20 Jul 2007
On the whole I am not very much in favour of collaborative writing. All too often this either ends up with a choppy, uneven style or else it becomes a bland piece of fluff with no depth or character.
The "Daughter of the Empire" series is a wonderful exception to the rule. Between them Feist & Wurts have created a fascinating & accessible world, rich with detail & depth. Mara is an excellent heroine, but the support characters are also beautifully portrayed, lending the work a degree of elegance & subtelty that is alll too frequently missing elsewhere.
If you do take up this novel to read, prepare yourself for an unforgetable journey through the exotic world of Kelewan & look out for the devious machinations of the Great Game, as can only be played by the Tsurani.....
Daughter of the Empire - By: Alexa, 05 Jun 2007
Raymond E Feist is an amazing author, I read his book magician & have proceeded to buy every one of his books I can get my hands on. This is the first book in the Empire trilogy & follows the life of Mara after the remaining members of her family have died in a war & she must take the title of Ruling Lady. It takes place on the world of Kelwen & shows the riftwar from the other side of the rift. The main characters are flawed but not so much that you don't like them. It was sometimes hard to get my head around the way the characters think as theirs is a world based on honour. The fact that this fictional world has been developed so completely is amazing to me. At first I wasn't sure about reading this as I didn't think I would be able to sympathise with characters that lived on a world I had come to dislike from reading Magician but I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommended reading Magician first but it is not essential to enjoy this book.
No Loss of Power - By: Dr. Robert Fisher, 15 Nov 2006
I came to this trilogy having immersed myself in the Riftwar Saga - & was a little worried that Feist in combination with another author wouldn't hold the same power or connection.
Yikes! Was I wrong! Very powerful character portrayal, huge spread yet depth of plot, it's an absolute page-turner that will grip you, manipulate your emotions & leave you with very fond & happy memories. My initial fears were easily & quickly dispersed. A fine read, beautifully written & with fantsic description & the painting of wonderful vistas. Worth every penny!
