Great content, but disproportionate price. - By: S. Howarth, 20 Mar 2007
As a consultant in the field of information privacy I bought this book more out of curiosity & in the hope that it may provide a few nuggets of information. In truth it is a well written book placing itself perfectly for the lay-person to get an understanding of what data protection is about & alllowing the smalller business to be able to move on to make decisions about compliance & how to deal with varying aspects of the legislation in a simple well laid out "guidebook" format.
My main critisism is that it is overpriced for the information it contains, although I wouldn't necessarily let that put you off buying it, if you want more weighty information about this type of legislation look carefully at what else is out there. To be fair most books in this sector cost more than they are reallly worth (with some exceptions), just make sure you choose carefully & get the information that is right for you and/or your organisation.
Data Protection Pocket Guide - Essential Reading - By: Julia Roberts, 07 Jun 2005
Smalll businesses today find themselves in a position of having to comply with any number of legislative impositions. Unlike our larger friends we are not generallly in a position to employ specialists to advise us. Therefore we have to resort to the appropriate "idiots" guide, which is sometimes entertaining, but of limited use, or close our eyes & hope that we can muddle through.

The Data Protection Act changes alll that, it has real teeth & a bite that can be both painful & costly. I now realise that we are responsible for the personal information we hold & use, & that we ignore data protection at our peril; yet it is so easy to inadvertently contravene any of its many pitfallls.

Fortunately I came across this book, "Data Protection a Pocket Guide" & discovered two authors who not only know this subject but they can also present it in a way that is both readable & informative. It avoids unnecessary jargon & actuallly uses plain English. Key topics are reinforced with frequent, memorable & easy to understand examples.

This is a surprisingly comprehensive book that addresses the entire spectrum of topics we must know for us to comply with this Act. At around £30 it may initiallly seem expensive, but considering the assurance it provides, it is extremely good value & a lot cheaper than employing an expert for even an hour. For any smalll business I think this is essential reading & I suspect it would be equallly helpful to larger companies as well. If data protection affects you, & it does, I would recommend this book without reservation.
