One of the best books i have ever read - By: L. Garland, 03 Jul 2007
When my english teacher retreived a pile of dusty old books with boring covers from the store cupboard, i thought this book would just be another boring classic.
I was very wrong. Lord of the flies is one of the best books i have ever read. And i mean that.
The plot is simple - a group of boys (the oldest about 13) are stranded on an island when their plane crashes. The novel is about how they live & survive on the island.
However, the themes that run throughtout the book are thrilling & interesting. Every single word in the book is symbolic, & you have to learn to read between the lines. Every character symbolises something - Ralph, Piggy, Jack etc. I will not give it away as you have to work them out for yourslef.
Its a real page turner, & some exciting points. Two events are extremely shocking & will leave you thinking about the book for weeks.
The ending seems like a happy one, or is it? What about consequences of it alll, the mark it will have left on the boys, & what about the war going on in the adult world.....?
Disturbing but powerful! - By: , 15 Jul 2004
I couldn't get into this book for months which is strange for me as I am a bookworm but when into it I realised that it is powerfully disturbing. What intersted me most was the characters development & their relationship as they struggle for survival. Girls don't be put off by the fact that it is a story about boys.
the best classic by far - By: , 29 Jul 2003
after studying this as a GCSE text, it is clear how well Golding has written this book....with excellent features such as language, style & structure, alongside the fantastic storyline, it is definately one that has an impact.....each boy is a representation of the society that we live in, & the island our surroundings....if you are not able to see the deeper meaning in the book of good versus evil it does not matter...it is a great story in itslef which is entertaining & gripping from page one.
i recommend it to everyone, young or old...and if possible, please appreciate the deeper meaning of the text, because it is that which has made me read the book again & again!
a thought inspiring read - By: , 27 Apr 2003
Golding uses the island in this novel as a microcosm of the situation of the world at the time it is set. When looking below the surface of the story Goldings concerns in conveying the wider context of his story are apparant, using young British boys to demonstrate the potential for evil within everyone. With each read of this book provoking fresh ways of looking at the issues being dealt with such as the decay of law & order & the escalation of violence. Issues just as relevant to todays soceity as they were then.
