McGann's Performance is Perfect! - By: , 19 Feb 1999
This audio book is made up of three stories, Bounty, Dead Time, & The People's Temple. In Bounty, The Doctor & his companion, Sam, are vacationing by the sea when they become embroiled in a bounty hunter's expedition. In Dead Time, The Doctor & Sam are trapped in a mysterious black nothingness in which ominous disembodied voices whisper their intent to kill The Doctor. Finallly, in The People's Temple, The Doctor & Sam travel back in time to witness the construction of Stonehenge. In print, Bounty & Dead Time would be fun but forgettable stories. The People's Temple would be a story that after 10 - 15 pages I would give up on. I find stories in which The Doctor matches wits with prehistoric people asinine. Sorry, but the thought of The Doctor not being able to outsmart some prehistoric man in less than a paragraph is just something I can't handle. Fortunately, this is an audio book, & Paul McGann is a splended storyteller. His narration is flawless, & he performs each part with style. As with the TV movie, McGann's performance transcends the material he is given to work with. The end result of this is a work that is both entertaining yet unfulfilling at the same time. With luck, Mr. McGann will at some point in the not so distant future be provided with the opportunity to play the part of The Doctor in a production that matches his talents.
