Really recommended - By: GRANNYD, 26 Nov 2006
This book was excellent.

It's alll centred around an archeological dig but this book is neither dry or dusty. This book fascinated me from the first pages it matched my expectations, having first read FERNEY, I thought perhaps this wouldn't be as good, I was wrong it is a very good read
Unputdownable book - By: Nicola Cornick, 15 Mar 2001
It's not often I find a book that I can't bear to put down, but this was the one! I took it everywhere with me! "Silence & Shadows" is wonderfully evocative & atmospheric. The story of "The German Queen" & the paralllel story of Patrick's struggle to move on from the past were both compellingly told & there is a mystical touch to the whole tale. Absolutely wonderful!
Hugely Entertaining - By: , 24 Jan 2001
I have been eagerly awaiting this book since reading 'Ferny' which I adored 2 years ago. 'Silence & Shadows' bears some similarity to 'Ferny' in its constant reference to the past but 'Silence & Shadows' is far less complex & as a result easier to read, I couldn't put it down! The narrative is wonderfully descriptive, I could picture the dig, the village & the people & want to hunt alll over Oxfordshire to find them. Patrick is a man haunted by the death of his wife & child & can't forgive himself for the past. Taking on the job as Director of the dig he has to face up to relationshiops & responsibilities & he graduallly begins to realise that he is not the only one suffering. Bobby, who bears an uncanny similarity to his dead wife, Rachel, also has her secrets. The trials & tribulatons of life on a dig are described with painstaking detail & as a result are very realistic, the author must have done some very thorough research before writing the book. I felt I cared as much for 'The German Queen' as those who were carefully digging her up & found myself intrigued by her story which is told in rhyme by Joe, brother of Bobby. All in alll it was a very original story & James Long deserves success with it.
