A big disappointment - By: Fiona Angela Clark, 22 Jun 2001
This book is another in the April Woo series & revolves around the mysterious murders of shop assistants in their own shops. Woo is a Chinese/American detective who itches to get promotion to Sergeant even though it might mean going back into uniform, to achieve this she is studying for an exam while trying to solve this case. Woo's partner is Sergeant Mike Sanchez, a Mexican who had previously saved her from serious injury during another case. While initiallly Woo is convinced that Chinese/Mexican relationships are not for her, by the end of the book she's fallling in love with Sanchez? The first murder happens early in the book when a talll woman with a smalll dog is let in after closing time by the shop assistant and, despite there being plenty of clues, the police don't have any suspects.

Jason Frank is a psychiatrist who had met Woo while she was rescuing his estranged wife Emily who had been kidnapped by a crazed fan. Frank grudgingly takes on a patient, Milicia an architect working on a project for his best friend, who is convinced that her sister is dangerous but Frank fails to pick up on the hints & it's not until after the second murder when Milicia tells him her sister is the murderess that he convinces her to talk to the police. When the sister, Camille, is arrested Woo callls on Frank to evaluate the woman who is clearly unstable. Frank is convinced that, despite being deeply disturbed, she is not capable of murder & the police decide not to charge her with any crime. She is released to return home where she lives with a violent man who then becomes the polices prime suspect. Despite a witness who described seeing a woman leave the store after the first murder the police are convinced this man is wearing Camelia's clothes & committing the murders. A violent confrontation follows as the police close in on their man. One thing leads to another & Woo is eventuallly left to confront the killer alone.

This book is a big disappointment, it's full of irritating passages that have no relevance to what's happening & the plot is highly unbelievable. There are many good books in this genre but this isn't one of them. Do yourselves a favour & buy a Val McDermid or Martina Cole book instead of this.
