Disappointing, but all her other novels are great - By: , 07 Feb 2005
I am a great fan & have read alll of Joanna Trollope's books except for The Choir & The Rector. However this is the only one that I have difficulty with. All of the subsidiary characters are fine, but the main characters Liza & Archie do not come to life for me, I can understand the other reviewer's claim of plodding.

I do not relate to anti heroes therefore I think it is because Liza & Archie are so negative about everything, this is obviously the rationale of the novel but such characters do not lead to interesting conflicts to keep the pages turning. Also I just cannot believe some of the plot lines that are obviously intended to heighten the drama.

Even so, Trollope lovers should read this as part of the canon.

Slow but promising - By: Daisy573, 15 Apr 2002
This is my first Joanna Trollope book & Ive quite enjoyed it although I have to say it does plod along rather than race. Trollope's depictions of village life are vivid & endearing & her characters fairly colourful. However, the annoying young daughter could have been left out of the book as Trollope introduced her as having a lisp which she has painfully reproduced throughout the book. Every time the child speaks her words are peppered with 'S's' which Trollope has faithfully converted to 'th's'. This drives me mad & to be honoest just makes the child irritating rather than cute, which I imagine is what Trollope was going for.

Anyway, this book is worth a read & I will certainly read other titles by Trollope. Maybe I just started with one that is not her best.
