A great book that became a firm friend - By: Lynda, 08 Jun 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it straight through once when I first bought it, & then re-read it section-by-section as I went through the various stages of IVF.
I found it very helpful as it gives a very human & honest account of the actual experience of each stage, the medications involved & their side-effects as experienced by Imogen. This type of personal account is just not found in the more technical guides to IVF.
As well as being sad in places, it was also very funny in others & I insisted on reading out relevant sections to those family members involved in our IVF journey. This book became a great companion through our treatment.
hilarious - By: Ms. F. I. Macdonald, 29 Apr 2008
i got through this book in under three hours & thats great for me. It had me roaring with laughter at the beginning & then settling into a more mellow supportive state later on. As many people have i'm sure read this book as a guide to being pregnant i cannot say how useful or unhelpful it actuallly is because i am not pregnant, but even so it did strike a cord with me, Imogen E-Jones is a talented writer & reallly makes you empathize with her characters.
Finally Something to Laugh with - By: A. Kietz, 07 Feb 2008
Having gone through a couple of "advise" books that just made me feel depressed, I found this book in the Infertility section & was SO grateful for this brilliant read. I was laughing tears reading it! This book can be so funny as well as sad and, amongst many things, looking cheekily on a serious topic. It is great to have a more cheerful view on reproduction.
Of course the book will not bring you babies, but lot's of laughter & a more relaxed view on life :o)
not much help i'm afraid - By: nanga, 13 Aug 2007
Assuming that the main market for this book is anyone thinking about, or about to undertake IVF, I wouldn't recommend this if a) you are re-mortgaging your house to pay for the treatment or b) are having to hold down a full time job throughout the duration of the IVF. Edwards-Jones, despite constantly carping on about the price of her various experiences of both mainstream & 'alternative' fertilty treatment, seems to have unlimited funds, thanks to her chauffeur driven husband & manages to juggle appointments with the UK's most pretigious & exclusive fertility experts with 5 star holidays in far flung places in order to recover from her ordeals. Nice work if you can get it. Bearing in mind the vast majority of desperate, infertile couples are working double shifts & borrowing money beyond their means in order to fund treatment, it's difficult to feel anything like sympathy or empathy for the narrator.
Even despite this irritation, this book is nothing like as informative, & definitely not as funny as the claims made by presumably her mates featured on the back cover. It's a collection of her Telegraph column, & the author or publisher has made little effort to edit it so that we aren't given numerous 'flash-backs' to remind us of what she's already been through. If like me, you read this book in one sitting, the re-capping gets a bit tedious.
There are so few honest & informative books on IVF - it's a shame this one also is wide of the mark.
Brilliant & Refreshing - By: V. Geddes, 19 Sep 2006
This book was brilliant, very honest, very open & very funny. If you want to take a break from your own infertility problems & feel like you need to be able to laugh through the side effects of Clomid & infertility treatments then buy this book.
