Octavia - By: Ginny Potter, 23 Oct 2008
Definitely my favourite of JC's early romance stories; is actuallly gripping & has well developed characters, unlike the majority of books in this genre.
The story is about Octavia, who is beautiful & knows how to use it. Under normal circumstances you would probably find yourself hating this character, but Jilly writes in a way that makes you sympathise & feel involved. The lead male is good also, which helps :P

i have now read this book 3 or 4 times, & probably will many more in the future. From this series i also enjoyed prudence & harriet, but havent read bella or emily yet so cant comment. good for enjoyable, lightweight reading, while her rutshire chronicles are fantastic also!

Octavia Rule's - By: H. C. Anderson, 06 Dec 2006
This is my favourite of Jilly Cooper's early romances. It has a great plot making you root for a character who would normallly be the bad guy - think of 'My Best Friends Wedding' or even 'Gone with the Wind'. This is probably the most enjoyable of Cooper's earlier books because it has so many great one liners the heroines in her other books are too nice to be as bitchy & funny as Octavia.

There is something wonderfully comforting & inspiring about this book. The heroine does not obsess about her weight or finding a man - she does not have to worry about either. And in the end (which I won't give away) she acheives a great deal more independence & self realisation (and actualisation) than the average heroine of romantic fiction/ chick lit.

Brilliant, Escapist fun & ... dare I say it? Far better than the Rutshire novels.
other side of the story - By: J. reynolds, 18 Oct 2006
This has always been my favourite of Jilly's light, early romances with lovely characterisation & settings. Jilly turns the tables on most romances siding with the beautiful, bitchy (at the start at least) character who would usuallly the falll girl & reallly makes you want her to have a happy ending.
classic romance - By: michelle ann, 26 Jun 2006
I'm surprised that there are no reviews for this, as it was first published in the 1970s, & the fact that it is still in print shows that it has staying power. This was one of the earliest novels Jilly wrote, & I prefer these to her later books, as they are less blockbuster, but have much better plots & charecters, & the same witty puns.

This book is about a poor little rich girl who tries to steal her best friend's fiancee, but meets her match when she loses alll her money. Great light romance without being inane.
