Wonderful - By: Mr. G. Battle, 18 May 2008
Waylander is without any doubt one of the most fascinating anti-heroes ever created. Previous books follow the path from his creation as an assassin & his journey to achieve redemption with expert character development from Gemmell. In the final volume Waylander is set to journey across the sea in a final attempt to be alone & contemplate life; for he is old now, grey & ready to receive the Source. Gemmell has other plans for Waylander. Following on from the demon story created in a previous Drenai novel, Winter Warriors, Hero in the Shadows once more plunges heroes against magic, although Gemmell has crafted this tale with it's roots firmly in action & development of the new heroes, who fight alongside Waylander. The magic used here is insidious & the the body count just keeps rising! There are strong emotional currents throughout & Gemmell weaves action, tension, mystery, sorcery & the pull of emotions most expertly - Hero in the Shadows is a sublime read. The dialogue is Gemmell's sharpest too, with many wry smiles to be had with Waylander's dark retorts. Recommended to any fantasy reader, although previous Drenai novels (especiallly the Waylander ones & Winter Warriors) would create a perfect backdrop.
Fine book but not his best - By: J. C. Wheeler, 17 Jun 2007
This is a good read & does justice to the Waylander myth but it is not the best of the bunch. The story is a tad to mystical.
Waylander is back... - By: , 02 Apr 2005
What can i say about Waylander the slayer, he reallly makes the reader feel alive. This has got to be one of Mr. Gemmels best series. I just wish there could have been more...
When i first heard about a third book i was exstatic, & after reading it i loved every page.
Waylander almost makes you believe that anything is possible & that no obstacle is ever too big.
In this book Waylander tries once again to live the quiet life, but once again is drawn back into what he does best.
There is so much that i want to say but unfortunately that would give away so much of the plot.
Matze Chai makes a welcome come back & is joined by new characters.
If you havent read any of his books this series would be a great start.
Gemmel at his best - By: , 25 Oct 2002
I only recently started reading gemmel a few months ago & ive went through a book or two a week!
This man is a genius & his talent for making the reader feel involved with the characters is amazing. This book however is the BEST gemmel ive read yet (Aint read legend yet but i just bought it there ;) )
Waylander is everything any self respecting RP nerd has wanted to be :)
Waylander is Back! - By: , 09 Nov 2001
I was so excited when this book was released, I had been hoping for months that another Waylander Novel would be written. I expected a whole lot from David Gemmell, & he didn't dissapoint. This book grabs you & takes you along a ride that will see heroes stand against the evil strong. Gemmell does pander to the fact of saintly heroes, his characters are multi dimensional, they live & breathe in every word. The characters brim emotions we alll have, & this makes them real, to me anyway. Why Wayalnder & the two sequel books have not been made 9into films I do not know. To any directors out there, this would work, this would work very very well.
Hero in the Shadows is the latest tale of Waylander, the man who killed the king........ & it see's him once again siding himself against the evil forces, as he is drawn into a demonic war that has raged for centuries.
You have to read this, it is amazing.
