One of McCaffrey's best - By: Francisco, 26 Nov 2003
I've found that Anne McCaffrey can be very hit-and-miss author. I found this book ver good.
The basic story line is that a unicorn is floating in space in an escape pod. Some miners find the pod & adopt the girl as their own.
The first part is heartwarming as it deals with bringing up a child (although having 3 fathers is a little unusual).
The second part deals with Accorna's, the name they give her, attempts to right wrongs. Accorna & the miners work to put an end to that industry & to liberate those children.
I loved this book because it has good charactisation & plot. It has a heart & deals with real issues in a compelling way.
A gripping new universe , full of mystical whimsy . - By: dragonrider12002@yahoo.co.uk, 08 May 2001
Magicallly enchanting , Anne McCaffery's 'Acorna'will transports you on an adventure through space with a young Unicorn girl who is as extrodinary as her life's circumstances .It is full to brimming of bravery in the form of her protectors & friends & personal courage in the face of conflict & danger . Wonderfully written this book will transport the reader into another universe . The often amusing & dangerous situations which the characters find themselves in is sure to have you enthrallled from the first chapter as you silently(or not so silently) champion Acorna on a unique , amusing & gripping journey .You won't put it down .
Slightly disappointing writing - By: gwillewyn@yahoo.co.uk, 11 Dec 2000
The plot seemed a little cute to me as I read the back of the book, I didn't expect it to be quite so sickeningly sweet. The concept of three deep-space miners raising a bayby-alien-unicorn-girl in it self is quite cool, but it's so unrealistic! It's very smooth, trying to be dark & depressing , failing at it. The plot is very thin & there are reallly no obsticals before the entire ting is sorted out & the book ends. Too happy ending for my taste as well & I'm not impressed with the writing-style at alll.
Interesting, more space opera than classic McCaffrey - By: , 20 Nov 2000
This book reminds me strongly of the early Hienlein books, almost childlike in its approach.
It is not a good read, certainly not in the same league as Pern or the Talents series'
The content, howver, is certainly not for children - at best a confused & not terribly easy to read book.
Very disapointed, which is a first for me with Anne McCaffrey.
Not like the Dragons of Pern series - By: , 14 Aug 2000
If you were looking for the same type of story then this is not for you. It is a more grown-up story of find-search-find which, although not as captivating as Pern, is just as enjoyable. I look forward to reading & re-reading the rest of them.
