good, light read. - By: S. Hapgood, 27 Jun 2004
A bunch of friends meet at Patrick & Caroline's plush new country house for a weekend of tennis, boozing & eating. But it seems that behind alll the money & luxury alll is far from what it seems. Matters are complicated further by an ex-wife turning up out of the blue. This is a good, very enjoyable read, with alll the action taking place over two days, & in the confines of the house & garden. But it must be said it lacked any real bite, & the final page revelation about Ella could be seen coming a mile off, alll of which was a bit disappointing, but on the whole this is recommended if you want a real page-turner. Madeleine Wickham writes about the 'nouveau riche' without a single snobbish bone in her body, (are you listening, Jilly Cooper?!) & I liked that.

This is a nice book to sit out in the sun & read. You can get involved with alll the characters written, it's funny & moving at the same time.
readable; well-written - By: , 30 Sep 2000
The plot of this book was more prosaic & predictable than The Wedding Girl, which I adored. The "one stage set" aspect reminded me of the movie, The Big Chill. If you want a nice read, here you have it. If you want a lot of humor, action, & plot twists, then look elsewhere.

This is a good read. it appealed to me being a thirty-something newly married London woman. It was a whole lot more than I anticipated, a surprising, believable & interesting story-The main character is caught in a web of her own deception & theres a new twist virtuallly every chapter-do buy..
