"A delightful Regency romance - By: , 03 Sep 2002
"Until You" is a beautifully written sequel to "Whitney my Love".I loved the first book & I found the second one nearly as good as well. The plot is interesting & captures the reader's attention from the beginning. The leading female character is Sheridan Bromley a young American woman who travels to England chaperoning an heiress to meet her fiance. Unfortunately Miss Charise Lancaster is a flirty & spoilt chit & she escapes with a different suitor leaving Sheridan to arrive in England alone. She thinks the talll & handsome stranger is Lord Burleton the jilted fiance & she tries to explain what happened. At that moment something hits her head in the docks & she loses consciousness. She awakens in a beautiful room finding the same handsome man watching her & she realises she doesn't remember anything from her previous life. And then the story beggins with lots of misunderstandings, fun & emotional overtunes. The handsome lord is Stephen Westmoreland, brother of Clayton the Duke of Claymore & Whitney's brother-in-law. He has his own problems to sort out & he doesn't need an American chit in the middle of it. He feels guilty & he tries to help Sherry to get back her memory & hopefully disappear from his life.. In the meantime the whole Westmoreland family arrives & tries to get Stephen marry Sherry. The way this fully developed & very alive & very reluctant couple finds the way to each other's heart is wonderful. The reader can follow their thinking & the awakening of their love. Sherry is a beautiful character. She is clever, good & very generous. Also she is very proud & she doesn't want to be a burden on anyone.Stephen is a typical male.
He is stubborn, proud, very reluctant to get married & he thinks he is being deceived. The way to happiness is not easy & Sherry & Stephen must go through lots of heartache & misunderstandings. Judith McNaught is a wonderful storyteller & she knows her characters very well.
UNTIL YOU is a wonderful read & the love story very real & human. Sherry & Stephen are both very likeable characters & you keep your fingers crossed for them alll the time. The secondary characters are real persons as well & the reappearence of many people from "Whitney my Love" gives this novel a familiar touch.
Ms McNaught is a talented author who knows her characters & she is well aware of life in Regency England. It's very easy to recommend this book to alll historical romance readers.
boring and repeating - By: , 20 Jan 2002
After "Whitney my love" which I liked I was curious about its continuation, but "Until you" is a complete bore, repeating, & the love scenes are reallly prudish. I can't believe that people acted so stupidly even in those days.
The very best of historical fiction - By: , 03 Jan 2001
Judith McNaught had a formidable task to improve upon Whitney My Love. However, she clearly succeeds with Until You. Ms McNaught leads the reader along a beautiful tale reintroducing old friends & presenting a delightful heroine whom one cannot help but love. Sheridan Bromley is a character any woman can identify with, demonstrating love, compassion, & of course a distinctive stubborn streak. Naturallly, Ms McNaught provides Sheridan with an equallly delighful hero in the guise of Stephen, an Earl & brother to the Duke of Claymore whom we first met in Whitney My Love.
Ms McNaught is one of the best romance writers currently in print. It is rare to be able to speak of a writer without one 'bad' book to their name. All of Ms McNaught's contributions have been exceptional, both historical & modern. Her next book "Waters Edge" is eagerly awaited, & perhaps the only criticism to be voiced is that she is not a prolific enough writer to keep up with her readers thirst for her wonderful stories!
