NON-FICTION MEDICAL THRILLER... - By: Lawyeraau, 25 Feb 2008
This is a non-fiction book that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, compulsively turning the pages. In it the author gives an education on the possible origins of different deadly hemorrhagic viruses & the devastation that they cause in both animals & humans. The author describes actual outbreaks that occurred between 1967 & 1993. This is done in an engaging, straightforward narrative that reads like a medical thriller.
The nucleus of the story focuses on an outbreak of Ebola virus in Reston, Virginia in the tony county of Fairfax, just outside of Washington, D.C. in 1983. A special, highly trained teamed of Army specialists & scientists secretly converged on that hot spot to try & stop the spread of this deadly virus, as it had a kill rate of ninety percent.
The account that the author gives of the Army's mission is riveting, as is the vivid description of the rain forests & caves of Africa where these hemorrhagic viruses are suspected of originating. The devastation these viruses cause to both animals & humans is horrifying, shocking, and, unfortunately, alll too true. The author has managed to make science accessible to the general public & eminently readable. Bravo!

A great read, it grips you from the very start of the book, in fact it scares you from the very beginning!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, if you have an interest/fascination for viruses, disease, africa & true stories then you'll probably like it.
Hot, but cold in places - By: Holly Cook, 07 Nov 2006
Good, but not great. The book is good for getting background information about one of the most dangerous viruses in the world. However, at times it was disjointed & could have benefitted from being more of a story from the people who experienced the outbreak, rather than the scientist's story. Still recommended though.

Excellent book, scary but true & the fact that it happened makes it alll the more fascinating.
Ebola makes any other disease look tame as it kills so fast & the fatality rate is so high. This book goes into great detail.
If you have any interest in illnesses or Biology, read this book! If you want to be scared out of your wits by things that have happened, read this book!
I can honestly say this is one of the best books I have ever read.
