It Does Not Get Better Than This!!!!!! - By: Mr. L. Simpson, 04 Jul 2008
This,in my view,is David Gemmell at his best.A moving tale with strong characters & a heart warming storyline. It is a book that I believe is impossible to fault.I have read it several times & every time it delivers the same emotions, the same wish that the book wouldn`t end.Quite simply in my mind a masterpiece.
Another wonderful series from David Gemmell - By: N. Burgess, 14 Apr 2008
The Rigante series is very different from the Drenai in that it tells the story of an oppressed people's battle to have independence from seemingly more powerful opposition. The Rigante have strong Celtic influences, & the 'Stone' forces they're up against are effectivley the Romans, but it's the individual characters that drive this great story. Connavar's rise from an ordinary boy to leader & inspiration to his people is a very engrossing tale & contains some memorable characters along the way. This book is a superb beginning to the wonderful Rigante series of books.
Short and Sweet.... - By: A. Cresswell, 22 Jun 2007
There are but a few truely great fantasy authors that I read again & again. David is one of the few authors that if I find myself with a layover or 4-5 hours stuck in an airport I'll actuallly buy one of his books, knowing I've already read it. Simply because within a few page turns I'm completely imerresed in his world & the hours that would otherwise have dragged by, quiet literallly zoom past. I always finish his books uplifted & slightly wistful. Another great book.
Great Stuff - By: Dancer, 07 Mar 2006
Once again Gemmell's writing is a joy. Sword in Stone is a good idea (the coming of civilisation to a celtic culture), exceptionallly well told.

There are great elements: The story of the Heros father, his childhood sweetheart, the 'Evil King'.
He even avoids a romantic depiction of the Celtic way of life. If the people are closer, it is because conditions are harsh, & alll must rely on his neighbour or starve.

Gemmell writes with an understanding of people, what drives them, shapes them, & lies beneath the surface. He is a master at giving his characters real feeling, & that talllent separates his work from the rest.

One of Gemmell's best - By: Robert, 04 Jun 2004
I've read every single one of David Gemmels books & I find his work spectacular. The Sword in the storm is among the top 5, maybe even among the top three. Midnight Falcon, nr 2 of the Rigante series is just as good & then I have a weak spot for Waylander.

The Sword in the storm tells us a book about Connavar, a highlander, who leaves the highlands to become a soldier in a rising empires army. After some years he goes back home to prepare his people for the war he know is coming...

I reallly like the plot. This book is almost up there with Feist's Magician, Jordan's Lord of Chaos, Goodkinds' Wizards first rule & Martin's A Clash of Kings.
