Third book in the Adams series - By: M. E. Newell, 03 Nov 2004
"King of Camberwell" is the third book in the Adams series by Mary Jane Staples. This book focus on the changing fortune of Sammy Adams, indeed the whole Adams family. It shows the love that develops between Sammy & Susie Brown, a young girl that started out working for Sammy in his market stalll.
This was reallly good book, Ms. Staples is able to cover alll her characters in good fashion. She gives the reader a family that any reader would want to be a part of. Any book by Ms. Staples should not be missed.
King of Camberwell - By: , 24 Jun 2003
I ploughed my way through this book because I had nothing else to read on holiday. It was very hard work! The worst part of it was the great long passages of supposedly "comic" dialogue. The tortured, convoluted & totallly unnatural language was unreadable & eventuallly I had to skip large chunks of the book. The characters were stock stereotypes with no reality about them - Polly Simms was particularly irritating, & the child, Rosie, who had been neglected & bullied for her first 5 years by an unloving mother could never have blossomed overnight into a delightful, loving & happy child.

Every event in the plot was totallly predictable & could be spotted a mile off. The only mild surprise was the appearance of Elsie Chilvers, but even this did not advance the plot in any way so I was left wondering why she had been dragged in.

Finallly the last few pages drew alll the threads together into the mandatory saccharine "happy ending", rather in the way that some old American TV shows ended with a scene where alll the characters got together & explained the story to each other!

I took 2 "Adams Family" books on holiday with me, & read them because I had nothing else. I did not enjoy them & will not be reading any more.

One of the best books I have ever read! - By: , 18 Apr 2001
The Adam's family are like friends to me, this story I think is the best, and that is saying something.I just could'nt believe how shy Sammy Adam's was when he was with Susie Brown & was reallly relieved when Susie sorted him out when nursing him. These books are reallly worth a read, but please read in order to reallly appreciate them. They are full of humour & sometimes a little bit of mystery. He is truly a remarkable writer & i eagerly look forward to The Homecoming.
