Warm-hearted true story of a young teacher in Alaska - By: judyprm, 27 Aug 2004
'Alaska in 1927 was as remoted as the moon, as rowdy & lawless as the Gold Rush. And a pretty young schoolteacher from Colorado like Anne Hobbs was even rarer than nuggets... At the age of 20 Anne Hobbs became the 'tisha' of a tiny one-class school in the remote Alaskan settlement of Chicken. At first she was welcomed with open arms, but soon her growing friendship with Fred Purdy, who was half Eskimo, brought her up against the prejudice of the other inhabitants, & when she dared bring a little Indian boy into her class the whole settlement was outraged....'

I loved this book, with its gentle romance & adventure. Its battle over prejudice is the main theme. Thoroughly recommended.
