A real personal study on the life of Jesus - By: Francis Kheng, 03 Jan 2008
Very often, we tend to read the gospel accounts from a more theological perspective. The numerous sermons delivered focus on the teachings of Jesus, & the hypothetical aspects of his life & relationship with others.
However, Philip Yancey does a great job at exploring the personal nature of Jesus, God in human form, on earth, & the very emotions our Lord Jesus Christ must have felt while here on earth.
This book reallly changed my outlook on Jesus! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have an in depth look into the life of Jesus, & the relational nature of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Really very good - find out who Jesus REALLY was. - By: G. Phillips, 06 Jul 2007
I haven't read that many books by christian authors but i definitely found this one one of the most interesting, unable-to-put-down ones!
I'd never reallly thought much before of the controversy Jesus, as a real living person in the first century, must have caused by his actions & his claims.
This book gives insight to the social & religious background that Jesus grew up in & makes the story of his ministry alll the more compelling as we realise exactly what it meant to say what he said, do what he did, what it meant to follow him. It reallly helped me to put myself in the perspective of being in the first century & realising what a dynamic person he must have been.
Also, it made him alll the more seem like a more real person & not someone whom i've heard a few "fairytale stories" about. He was real. He did live & he was very controversial for his time - & still is now!!
A reallly good book if you want to know more about the man Jesus reallly was & understand the times in which he grew up.
a great book but references please.. - By: Mrs. D. L. Cox, 22 Mar 2007
this book for me simply supported what i already believed about jesus but thought no one else thought.
i have always had my own views about jesus & what he would have been like & this book threw up no real surprises. the parts i highly prized were detail about the society he was raised in & information about contemporary religeouse groups & information about inter faith relationships.
my only bug with the book was that although yancey frequently quotes parts of the bible to support his ideas he tends to put them in his own words & people may miss their biblical reference if they are not familiar with the gospels & epistles. i would appreciate biblical references where neccesary even if they are just as foot notes.
due to the lack of references i think that a skeptical non believer would struggle to see any truth in the book.
in general i think yancey is an honest true believer & i would not hesitate to reccomend his work to others.
Essential - By: Kent Guy, 03 Jan 2006
As somone who has for a long time felt a huge disconnect between mainstream Christian teaching & who I perceived Jesus Christ to be, this book is... well, manna from heaven. Yancy is an honest & gifted writer, whose ability to cut through convention to the heart of the issue is unparallleled. Together with his later book, What's So Amazing About Grace, these should be required reading for anyone remotely interested in the God of Christianity, especiallly by those who have been put off by the establishment.

This book took away alll the doubtfull restraints of my faith in Jesus! Get it & read it!
